Aanar's Europe, Small Edition
-----------------------------

Map size: small
Players: 11
Barbarians: Raging
All rules are default

Play as England, Spain, France, Germany, Rome, Greece, Russia, Norway, Latvia, Austira-Hungry, or Ukraine.

Well after being completely bogged down with my huge map, I decided to try a small one. This map uses the same projection as my huge one, only with more of it cropped off (no more huge Sahara). I started with England, France, Rome, Germany, Greece, and Russia and then added additional civilizations to balance it out. (Otherwise the other civs grow too fast and England is left in the dust.)

With 11 civs on a small map, the game leans toward the military conquest. If you want to play more peacefully, the start locations which are realtively isolated would be best for you - England, Spain, Greece, or Norway.

The barbarians are set to "raging" mainly to make colonizing North Africa more difficult as well as to make conquering Ireland no breeze.

Resources are placed so that all capitals have 2 cattle and 1 grain and have reasonable access to 3 luxuries. If you play it to conquer, you'll find the resources are too plentiful because I tried to balance them so all start locations would have some.

I placed more empisis on resource balance than having them in the correct places. Note that "Ivory" represents wool and "Silk" represents Fine Timber. I tried changing the name in the editor, but it messed some things up. If someone has time to do a mod for this and the other civs on this map, that'd be great.

The main question I asked when working on balance was, "If I got a certain start location, would I play it, or re-start cause I thought it sucked?". I tested all start locations to at least 1000 BC just to make sure there werent' any glitches (I had to correct a few rivers that looked like you should be able to irrigate off of, but couldn't). I played through a few games on Monarch with little difficulty. Emporer is close, and no idea how hard it would be on Diety.

No, you can't set which civs start where. If it's important to you, I believe there is a save game editor that will let you do it posted on one of these forums.

Note that Ocean tiles were used in many places in the Mediterranean because cultural borders like to overlap sea and coast, but have a harder time with Ocean. Nothing more annoying than trying to sail your fleet around only to get, "Please remove your troops from our borders."

I put mountains along the top and bottom edges because otherwise the AI will put cities right on the edge, which can on occasion crash the game. There's also a trench to prevent walking around the map. Trouble is barbarians will keep popping on it and sailing in it (oh well) and you could drive an Aircraft Carrier up to it in the Atlantic and bomb Moscow (sigh).

Anyway, imo this map is quite fun. I enjoy playing it over and over so I think that's a good sign. ;)

Picture of the mini-map:

(The funny looking edges are due to the trench)

Here are some shots from the editor.

Picture of Spain:

Picture of Norway:

Picture of Greece:

Picture of Italy

(Note that I bumped Sicily one square northwest to make it an island.)

Things I'm debating:
1) Which civs to put between Russia, Germany, and Greece. As it is now with Hungry, Ukraine, and Latvia, Germany especially often loses the race to found cities. Perhaps only 2 civs in that area would be enough, but which two? Before I added Latvia, Russia and Norway grew quite a bit bigger than everyone else.

2) Put a civ in North Africa? Colonizing North Africa can be quite imprortant due to the strategic resources there, which gives an advantage to the start locations to the south and especially Spain.

3) Rome might need a boost somehow since often Greece will colonize Sicily and sometimes even southern Italy. The AI would rather put cities up in southern Germany as it is now.

4) Attach Ireland to England? This would make that start location quite a bit more playable. In several test games, France, Germany, Norway, or Spain will colonize Ireland and the Shetland Islands before England. I tried to avoid this by giving England more goody huts to hopefully speed their way to map making. If I (or someone else) gets around to making a mod, perhaps either starting England with Map Making or a Galley would be reasonable.

Nice map. There was constant war, it seemed, but fun.
Good job!
Although some resources came very scarce especially saltpeter, but thats ok.

Is it possible to start in correct locations?

Which start location did you play? I'll take another look at the saltpeter. Rubber and Oil are scarce - a good or bad thing depending on whether you have any or not.

As far as start locations, as I said, there are utilities posted on these boards. If I figure out how to make a mod to make Civs for some of the start locations, it'd actually be worthwile putting them in the right places.

About this trench thingie... I understand it's there to stop people going off the edge of the map, but why does it have to be trench? Since it's impossible to build on mountains, surely all you need is a single line of mountains?

Oh, and the map's great!
:goodjob:

A single line of mountains would still alow you to walk over. The moat ensures that wont happen. Then you need mountains on each side of the moat so that no port cities can be founded to allow a transport acess to the moat. Actually now that I think about it, if the game thinks the moat was a freshwater lake, then you can't build ships on it. But I'm not sure how it decideds that. I wish there was a simple flag in the map editor to turn off the wrap-around like in SMAC. Ah well, maybe in a patch.

Hi...

I'm Korean boy.. (Republic)

This map is very good..

I hope 'Aanar's Europe, Small Edition 2'

Sorry.. --; I don't know english well..

U're asking which two eastern european civilizations choose??
Latvia, Austria-Hungary or Ukraine??
AND WHAT ABOUT POLAND?!?
You better first study some of europes middle-age history and see how great were Poles in XVI and XVII centuries!
But of course i trully thank u for your time. magnificent job!

Warsaw is too close to Berlin to use Poland as a start location. If I were to chose start locations by picking the top 10 or 12 "greatest" civs of Europe, well first it would be a tough call and second the map would most likely not be nearly as playable. That might make Portrugal a canditate, but Spain would crunch it for growth. Similarily for the Dutch. Unfortunetly in Civ3 territory equals power so the start locations had to be placed to divvy out the availble land. If you dont like it, change it and post it here. I don't mind at all. ;)

Gramphos' Civ3CopyTool can be used to make the map flat, do you want me to send you a flat version of your map? (I'll leave removing the trench to you)

Thanks, I'll be sure to remove the trench if I can find the time to work on version 2.

could you post the flat map here and than we can remove the trench on our own.
thnx

Trench has been removed... you might want to patch up greece...

thnx a lot
I enloyed the map!
It is one of the best!Could you make a small/medium size map of earth? I don't like games that take 2 month to play

Glad you like it Stormbringer. I'm pretty sure I'll never make a small/medium earth map. Unless you distort it badly (which you'll never get me to do), each continent would really only be big enough for 1 civ which would make the gameplay pretty silly in historical terms. It's enough of a stretch in Marla's map having the European civs colonizing all of Asia.

This small Europe map is hardly historic either, but it's kinda fun to have recognizable terrain with city spacing close to that in real life. Also it's fun to play out the "what if?" scenarios such as play Germany only make sure you win WWII or the Romans and recreate the Roman Empire, or put your manipulative skills to work and try to maintain a balance of power as England or France.

Sorry that this map isn't getting updated. I promise I will if I ever start playing Civ III again.

I played your map and enjoyed it a lot. At first I started in eastern Europe, and made some mistakes, so I started over, this time ending up in France playing as Germany. It´s a wonderful representation of Europe, and if I could give your map 4,5 out of 5 I would have. You explain everything in the thread, but I think it would have been nice if you had also attached a txt-file to the map, including some of the information.
Oh, and it was really nice to see Malta included. I built a city there, although it failed to become as important a central mediterranean base as Malta was for centuries in real life. Well, perhaps it would have been if I hadn´t gone for the easiest difficulty after messing up things on the first attempt. Er... Since I started that game in northeastern Europe, I would not have reached Malta until it had already been settled. :)
In essense, this is a really good map. I don´t think I could have done a better job than you, no matter how much time I´d put into such a project.

"Malta"

it's too small. england shouldn't be isolated. it should be surrounded by the celtic nations (wales, scotland, ireland (rep. of)). celts should be there.

but it's too small. there's no way i can play as celts in wales and play against the english (who also have too little land).

make the bigger one!!! i want big wars on the british isles.
