AAW - Almost Always War

got it.
we are moving fast :)

Yeah, real fast. Nice turns Shadzy. We are in good shape. Once we get courthouses up, we can keep every city.

Perhaps I shouldn't have stretched our military quite so thin during my turns.

We are moving extremely fast. By the end of next week, we may very well have won already  Wonder if we get props for speediest finish for a SG or something ;)

Yup , we can probebly finish this off very soon .
Greeks are expanding a lot though, i think they have 6 city's now and are making more GPT then us atm. They are up at least 4 techs while also being down 4 , so we shouldnt wait to long to get a pillaging force over there.

Yep, besides, I always had a bit of a grudge against Alex after a few very long wars started by him. That madman pumps troops out like there's no tomorrow.

After generations of blood-thirsdy rulers, a meek and civilized leader takes control of the Mongol empire. Behind his back often referred to as bihary the treasury-killer, bihary the enlightened starts his turns.

700AD (0)
I crank up research to 100%, because I want to get Polytheism in 1 turn after COL. MM our cities for commerce and growth wherever I can get stuff built in the same number of turns. I move our western army towards Cuczo.

720AD (1)
Our axeman defends against French archer at Orleans. Our axeman loses against Inca axeman at Rheims.
Code of Laws comes in. I go for Polytheism. Science slider back to 50%, since we get Poly in 1 turn anyways.
Karakorum granary - market.
Kyoto swordsman - courthouse.
I hate to be pinned at Rheims, I'd rather lose some catapults, so I attack.
Cata (57%) beats archer (down to 4.1)
Cata (70%) loses against archer
Cata (90%) beats archer (down to 4.1)
Healer axeman (95%) beats archer (down to 4.1)
City pawner sword (95%) beats axeman. (down to 3.6)
Inca are destroyed near Rheims.
I should get some defense up there, so the Rheims army can also move west.
Started to build the southern highway across the desert, covered by a sword. We will need this war path to hit the Greek. Also started the central highway, towards Czuczo. Converged on Czuczo, I will start bombing next turn.

740AD (2)
Our worker pair is captured by an Inca chariot. Where did he come from?
Polytheism comes in. I start Monotheism, but just wait!
Besh WE - courthouse
WE punishes stealer chariot. Other WE recaptures workers. Bombarding Czuczo, troops converge, others are healing.
Make peace with Napoleon. We get Meditation, Priesthood, Sailing and 50golds. I was hoping for Monotheism too, but he does not have it... Still, researching Poly in one turn was worthwhile, as we got Priesthood.
I declare war on Montezuma.
I go for Calendar (3 turns at 50%, -32 gpt, we have 208g in the bank).

760AD (3)
Two million souls.
I start moving catas from Rheims south, and trying to build a road from the north towards Czuczo. A WE is heading up there to boost our defences,
but I would be happier to have another WE and an archer in the area too. I will work on that.

780AD (4)
Ning-hsia granary - forge
Rheims comes online. Start forge.
Let the Siege of Czuczo begin!
Cata boms it down to 0% :)
Cata (barrage2, 3%) withdraws
Cata (b1, 27%) wins, down to 0.2
WE (combat2, 97%) kills archer w/o scratch :mischief:
WE (combat1, 99%) kills archer, down to 5.4
sword (combat2, 73%) kills axeman
anti archer sword kills chariot, no scratch ;)
sword (cr1, 99%) kills chariot, no scratch. :p
Czuczo is destroyed for 165 golds.

800AD (5)
Calendar comes in. Start Monarchy.
Teno market - courthouse
Chicken Itza (+25% defense in every city, needs Code of Laws) is built by Greece  Do they suspect something? :mischief:
The attackers of Czuczo are healing, but the healthy half (with a catapult) start moving west - southwest. Plan: After destroying the southernmost Inca town, we will have enough attack sutface against the Greek to bring it to
them en force (perhaps making peace with the Inca).
3 catapults, covered by a spear, is trying to move southwest from the former French region too. But there is still some Inca presence in the north.

820AD (6)
Killing a jaguar near Teno.

840AD (7)
Kyoto courthouse - keshik for mobile defence against the Aztecs.
Citypawner starts a long march to the southwest.

860AD (8)
Karakorum market - archer
Kyoto keshik - WE

880AD (9)
Monarchy - Feudalism
Karakorum archer - WE
Besh courthouse - market
Orleans granary - forge
Teo market - courthouse
the Greek have Feudalism

900AD
Turfan market - courthouse
Converged on Tiwanaku and started bombarding.
I stop now.

The northern territories should be safe now with an extra archer moving up, and a WE built in Karakorum, intended to move up there too.
The barb attacks near Kyoto is a boot-camp for our soldiers - Fight them, and send them west as they gain some experience.
Hey, I just noticed there is a barb city northwest of Beshbalik. Watch out!
Tiwanaku should fall soon, after that we may want to make peace and try to rush the Greek.
Go for Vassalage as soon as we get Feudalism.
We have 107 golds in bank, and lose 7 gpt at 40%. Not too bad for a treasury-killer

How we will handle the Greek - We shall see.

Should we go for conquest or domination? Both are feasible I think.
Happy-wise we are OK, WW is up to 2, but we have lots of happy resources, and we are building plantations and wineries all around the empire.
Health-wise we are not so good. Perhaps we should go for that banana close to Orleans with a city. I did not see any other health resources close to us, but take a look. And we can always build some aqueducts and the Hanging Gardens if you want.

I got it , il swap with katank for 1 round , have some time right now , im busy after that untill monday .
About our goal , wouldnt it be wiser to just kill the civs off?
Right now even if we make peace we always get WW back the moment we declare again .
If we kill the civs off however the WW will vanish and doing so with the aztec and inca and french shortly after will mean we can start the war vs the greeks with no WW at all. So im in favor off killing the civs off.

Kill! Kill! Kill! (the entire coliseum in the background chants).

Yep, finish them off. If you can squeeze some techs from them, then by all means do so first but otherwise we go for the jugular.

Plan for this turn set : Destroy the Inca's and that barb town west of Beshalik. Perhaps even kill the Aztecs and French .

Turn 0 900AD:
Everything looks very good , move a few troops to kill barbs.

IBT : Kill a barb archer.

Turn 1 920AD:
Kyoto : WE > Market
Kill a barb axe near Kyoto.

IBT : Kill 2 barb axes neir Rheims.

Turn 2 940AD:
Karakorum > Aqueduct.
The inca's pull a spear/axe/settler out of Tiwanaku where we have 14 units ready to charge in ...
Raze Tiwanaku and kill the settler trio without losses , we get 109 gold and 5 workers.
Lose a cat vs a spear/archer combo cause of me using go to orders in the fog  Retaliate and kill the spear/archer.

Turn 3 960AD:
Moving and healing
Inca's comes begging for peace , i decline.

Turn 4 980AD:
Alexander adops serfdom and vassalage.
Raze Ollantaytambo and net us 144 gold , Inca's are destroyed.
Declare on Napoleon.
Notice 4 barbs north of Rheims.
Also notice a spear / archer / settler trio near Marseille.

Turn 5 1000AD:
After giving it 5 minutes of thinking i decide to kill the aztecs as well , raze texcoco without losses. We can use a little challenge here , declare on Alexander.
I split our troops that killed the Inca's , half of the army moves towards Rheims while the others need to heal and will head towards Alexander's city's .

IBT : Kill barb Axe

Turn 6 1010AD:
Beshalik : Market > WE
Turfan : Courthouse > WE

Turn 7 1020AD:
We enter the medieval age :goodjob:
Feudalism > Machinery
Karakorum : Aqueduct > Longbow
Teotihuacan : Courthouse > WE
Tenochtitlan : Courthouse > Library
Kill a french archer , lose with our healing axe near Rheims 98% flawlesly (sp)vs the archer of the settler trio
Revolt to vassalage.

Turn 8 1030AD:
Raze barb town west of Beshalik.

IBT : Barb sword kills our wounded ele from sacking the barb town.
All these roads with lots of fog make these barbs very dangerous.

Turn 9 1040AD:
Kyoto : Market > keshik

Turn 10 1050AD:
Beshalik : WE > Keshik
Teotihuacan : WE > Keshik

Machinery due in 3 at 70% , we are losing 29GPT and have 279gold in the bank.

I was building keshiks , the idea was to give them formation and vision and use them as fog busters and send some to go scout on alexander , we have no idea what his lands and defenses look like.
Raging barbs and tons of free lands arent gonna make this easy , the barbs might pose more of a threath then the enemy civs have.

I still havent seen a single troop from Alexander ,
in the power graph he isnt that far behind us but i think he just upgraded a lot of archers to longbows that boosted that , but still be carefull .
He doesnt have construction so we dont have to fear catapults.

A lot of our city's have health problems but i think we need the army more for now . I would go for civil service after machinery so we can get our maceman army rollin and finish the game .

Marseilles only has 2 archers , the screenshot shows Paris troops , i doubt they will have a lot more , i havent been able to get a good attack chance on the settler trio , keep a eye out for them.

I looked at the save. Everything looks good. Our economy is on track now, no problem. I must acknowledge I panicked too soon. I learned something from you guys: As long as there is the military momentum, much of the academy can be financed by taking new cities. But of course, it is a slippery slope: if the military advancement is stopped...

Anyways, so what is there left to do? We still have no clear idea about the power of the Greek, but we should be able to roll over them soon. The barbarians do pose a little bit of a challenge... I suggest to keep the French cities, so at least up there we will not have barbarian activity, and fortify our border cities with longbows. We may even settle one or two additional cities to decrease the "great fog" in the middle of the map. I think we can kill the Greek with a Longbow - maceman - catapult - WE - knight push, we will not need any more sophisticated technology.
I would build catapults and longbows till macemen, then macemen, then knights.

We have a strong army approaching what I think is the Greek core. I am not sure we can take cities from them with that force, but we can surely pillage some. Even if they grind our vanguard army, we should make them pay dearly for it.

I may play 10 turns during the weekend, but if not, go ahead Katank!

If you have time, then play this weekend. I won't get time till Monday night.

As for the military momentum thing, yes, don't panick too much. Let your workers keep building cottages and chop courthouses. It's amazing how many cities you can have and still have net benefit from a new city provided you have courthouses everywhere.

Also, the pillage and raze income may just be enough to let your war machine roll long enough to victory. This works well on connected and open maps like Pangaea, Lakes, Great Plains, etc. You will definitely run out of steam and have to build on continents and archipelago etc.

Knights are not that great an idea. Remember that the Greeks have phalanxes. These things can really kill knights. Even a single phalanx in a city can be a major pain. Sticking to the basics of hordes of suicide catapults and macemen is probably a good idea. We can also throw in a few xbows to counter their macemen with fewer loses. Throw in a few pikers to deal with enemt knights is very necessary. These things can really kill maces. If you want, add a longbow or two to deal with xbows.

Engineering is a great tech for us. Extra movement will allow movement of our troops to the front quicker. It also enable the pikeman which is a great unit. The road movement is key for a big empire like ours to mobilize for war.

Remember that one extra turn that a suicide catapult is on the road is one extra turn that we are paying upkeep for a unit that we have little use for keeping around.

Its a effective way to keep your economy going by capturing city's.
I would never turn my science up to 100% for a few turns when i capture a city though, just to hit the limit and be stuck on 0% > 20 % without any gold and techs taking ages to research .
I dont mind losing GPT when researching i try to keep it so you can at least research 10/15 turns with you'r gold , if you capture some more city's turn it up for a few turns , once i get around 50 gold left i turn my science down untill i get some money again.
Im not sure if this is better , ive been using it this way for quite some time though and i like it this way.
If anything isnt clear i apoligise , my english isnt very good :)

Now on the game , we can build some city's to reduce the fog or use keshiks with vision as i suggested , they clear a LOT of tiles and will be cheaper for us.
Those towns arent gonna get very big anyway with the game being almost over , so they would mostly slow us down i think.
Thats just my pov though.

As for army i would go with WE + maceman + cats.
I dont really see the use of having longbows in the stacks , maybe 1/stack as a main defender , if they happen to get machinery and build crosbows we can get some knights but i doubt we gonna need them.

Edit : crossposted with katank atm all the greeks have are longbows , no maces not even cats. If we can pillage them fast and slow their reseach this will be over very fast .
I agree on going for engineering , 3 movement / turn really helps in getting troops to the front.

Yep, I rarely burn at 100% research. I'm probably being too fiscally responsible in some cases. Shadzy's way is a good compromise.

Longbow is definitely 1/stack at most. Piker 2/stack at most same with xbows. Macemen is probably 4-6. As many pults as you can fit.

Shadzy's right on new cities. No point in slow kill also.

ok, I got it.
I will play.

1050AD (0)
MM a bit for growth and commerce. We have 18 workers. They better earn their wage. During my turns, I disbanded some.

1060AD (1)

1070AD (2)
Moving on the French with WE's and longbows.

1080AD (3)
Greek longbow near Kyoto, covering a stack of 5 units.
French come with a big stack.
I destroy Marseilles for 39g.

1090AD (4)
The French lose two units against axeman and withdraw with the rest.
I am going against Paris with catas and WE's.
At Kyoto, I gather a big force of mixed units.

1100AD (5)

1110AD (6)
Some Greek units suicide at Kyoto, the others split. They do pillage our pig. Greek terminated in the area. Our vanguard stack finds Athens, lightly defended.

1120AD (7)
We lose a sword near rheims to barbs. Desperate, I rush a longbow.

1130AD (8)
Much barbarian activity around Rheims. Civil Service researched. Go for Engineering. Started building acemen all around. French have a catapult! Too little too late... Our vanguard stack is surrounded. started to bombard Athens. Squirmishes around Paris. We win the battles. A combined army start moving west from Kyoto. Most of our production is geared towards this attack.

1140AD (9)
Our Athens stack is attacked en force. Greek lose 6 units, we lose none.

1150AD (10)
Bombarding Paris and Athens. Those barbs are dangerous... especialy up north.

1160AD (11)
Athens is bombed down to 0%.
I am going for the coup! Sacrifise a catapult.
Go in with the city raiders. Have some lucky rolls...
Destroyed Athens.
Almost got Paris... Next turn, next player.

I stop here.

Note the blue borders west of Rheims. Thats where a French city is hiding.
We have a barb sword close to Orleans. I got some WE up there to deal with it. The Orleans - Rheims area is always attacked by barbs. Make sure you
have good defences up there!

Did a viscious whipping round before handing it over. Have fun!

I uploaded an incorrect save file. See current savefile above.

Nice turnset Bihary , the destruction of Athens will surely speed things up for us. Did we manage to get some fog cleaners out there?
Il have time to take a look at the game tonight.

No, I did not get any barb watchers out. It may still be adventageous to do so. I built tons of catapults, and our assembly lines produce rows of macemen now.
We will need 2-3 WE's in the northwest, the rest can go against the Greek. They should fall very easily.

Roster:

katank (feel free to play 15-20 turns, as you missed a turn)
shadzy
bihary

I fully expect this game will not come back to me, I think you guys will finish it within 20-25 turns.

Wait a minute... I attached the save from 1050AD, the one I got from shadzy. I will upload the latest savefile soon, sorry.
Here we go
