Tau hover tanks are neat too.

Just want to say that it is one of the (rather few) words where the German sound of the word fits so much better than the plain English "tank". Coincidence? I think not.

Deutsch would be much god damned easier to learn if you guys didn't have three genders.

The planned P.1000 Ratte:

It would have been too big, too conspicuous, too demanding, and too unwieldy to have been effective. Oh, and it also wouldn't have worked. Which is why Hitler loved the idea.

Well the English name comes from their parts' packaging during World War I. To keep them a secret, they were shipped in crates marked "tanks," as in, fuel tanks, and the name stuck.

But yes, PanzerKampfwagen sounds cooler, and it's literally a much better description of it (Panther Armored Car).

Believe me, there are harder languages to learn.

EDIT: TANKS TIME!

Behold, the Char B1 bis. At the start of the Second World War, this sucker was the best tank in the world. Problem was, French military doctrine, as did most countries' doctrines, called for using Armor in an infantry-support role, ranther than moving in large formations (which really even German doctrine didn't call for; tanks were to take and hold bridges and such so the infantry could get there and do the "real" fighting). That, and France didn't have many of them.

This guy is the British Tank, Infantry, Valentine III, the tank the Brits made the most of during World War Two. It replaced the Matilda, and found use in both the British Army during North Africa (Operation Crusader) and with the USSR thanks to lend-lease from the Battle of Moscow to the end of the war It was known for its reliability and comparatively strong armor, as well as cheap production costs (contributing to its high production number).

Funny, I was reading a Wikipedia article on Panzerkampfwagen 1 yesterday.
Cool pics.

I did not know that! Makes sense though, ty.

As far as the three genders go, Godwynn, meh, it's annoying for a foreigner I'll give you that especially because the distribution is so utterly random. But everbody will understand you if you say "das Panzer" (see how I stay on topic?) instead of "der Panzer" and nobody here would even correct you or mind it.

I know I'm getting off-topic, but am I to understand that Germans are not anal about the genders you assign to things other than people?

During WWII, tanks were not specifically designed to engage other tanks in combat. Instead, tanks were to assume an infantry support role, with special armor called Tank Destroyers that had weaker armor, but a badass artillery gun for defense. They also carried no machine guns, while tanks had several around them, because again, they were designed to both support infantry units, but also engage infantry positions.

Towards the end of the war, tanks become more designed to engage other tanks.

Here is one, the American M-10 Wolverine.

And a Soviet one, the ISU-22.

EDIT: and a German one, the Jagdpanzer.

Here is an uber tank destroyer.

Here's another German armor, the tank destroyer that wasn't supposed to be a tank destroyer: the Sturmgechutz III, or Stug III.

Thats the same stug in the right of my pic of a panzer 4.
