Activate Mods -- increase gold for higher level

Hello,

I would like to play higher difficulty levels but I lose a lot of times, so the fun factor is very low. Can I get a higher fun factor with activating mods with opportunities to increase perhaps gold.

I´m searching perhaps the last 2 days in the forum and can not find a way to activate mods. I can't find the folder described in the forums.
And the next question what mod should I load, if the mod is running.

My mac version OS X El Capitan
Civilization version 1.3.9
