I remember there was a middle ages mod that allowed some sort of imperialism - having conquered kingdoms as vassals, but I don't know how it worked, neither tried it in-game. I doubt it is possible.
That mod is a MEM2. But vassalage doesn't work in Civ3 the same way as in Civ4. And how it works? Check on your own - it's better to see once than to hear 100 times.
Avalanche, the mechanics works as following:
1) give a free tech "X knowledge" (X = civilization(s)) to civ X;
2) a big wonder "Kingdom of X" requires the free tech "knowledge of X" + a Palace as a pre-requisite => a special building can be built in a capital only;
3) when enemy captures a capital with a "Kingdom of X" building it may be called as "King of X" as well, but it doesn't affect gameplay - you just lost a city, a capital and a big wonder.
Yep, it's not a Civ4 vassalage system, it's just "some sort of".
The Vassal system we use in MEMII has nothing to do with Civ4.
The point in MEMII is that different governments allow for the establishment of "second capitals" in captured capitals, to reduce corruption in your empire. It works quite well and adds a whole new strategic aspect to the game.
