I should be receiving my new laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-S560P/B) today. :)

The latop comes with 512 MB RAM, and I want to add more RAM to it. Is it easy to do? I haven't added RAM to notebooks before.

I found a 1 GB RAM stick compatible with my notebook selling for $150 on Crucial.com:
http://www.crucial.com/store/MParts...7304&WSMD=VAIO+VGN-S560P+Series&WSPN=CT482655

But on Newegg I found a Kingston 1 GB RAM for only $81.25.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144183
and a Transcend one for $76.99: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820208312

From what I can tell, the specs of these two sticks are similar, and I plan to order the Kingston one tomorrow.

Probably a stupid question: It is OK to have a 512 MB RAM on one slot and a 1 GB RAM on another slot, right? So I can have 1.5 GB RAM total.

PS: I can't believe how bad the prices are on Crucial nowadays... They were a great place to buy RAMs a few years ago.

Laptops are nearly impossible to upgrade.

It depends on the model, if you haven't used up all slots, it should be fairly easy.
with my notebook (Dell Insprion) it would be just screw up the plate, enter the new ram, close again....

a problem is though, if you have two 256MB sticks, both slots would be used, which means that you'll have to take out both sticks and buy a new 1GB-Stick (or two 512).....

adding ram to a notebook in my experience is a lot like doing it in a desktop. Im sure you will be fine.

Just managed to add the RAM to my laptop... took me a few attempts. :)

Now I have 1.5 GB of RAM. :woohoo: It makes a big difference in performance!

Yep, makes it a lot easier for opportunists to steal your RAM. :D

Yea at first I had no idea how to add the RAM for my laptop, but it ended up I had to put pressure on it to get it to click in, but it's an expensive piece of equipment so I felt like I was breaking the thing... but it ended up working and now I have 768 RAM, half of Thunderfall. :)

I know how you felt. :D In my first two attempts, I didn't apply enough pressure and lots of the metal connectors were still visible, and the notebook could not detect the RAM.

At least now I know. But things like that should be mentioned. The case with my notebook's new ram had no instructions of any sort. Just a little plastic case with a serial number or something and the stick... I was scared of breaking the cheap (actually quite expensive) little thing.
