If you use it at all. I some times do.

For an easy early religion, buy Meditation (often also Mysticism is needed).
Worker Techs, to better utilize my resources.
BW and/or AH to see if I've got Bronze or Horses near

I rarely make more than 1 city, and rerely build anything in it. I'd rather buy a Settler and some Workers, because bulding these in the game slows down my growth. Often Workboats, to utilize Seafood early, for quick growth.

Always a Warrior and/or Scout, just to have some fogbuster, hut buster unit and to reap exp by goading stupid animals to attack while in advantageous terrain.

What do you other do?

well, it depends on my start. I always attempt to grab BW and a worker tech so that i can place improvements. a scout if i can, otherwise warriors. i also prefer to have 2 cities unless epic, i have the points for 3. if im later than classical era, i even go 4 if i have a great spot. roads if i can to connect military resorces to my city.

so what i really want is...

2-3 cities
6 tile improvements (up to 14 if i include roads)
one tech (2 if i have any left)
2 warrior
one scout OR a worker

This tends to do me well. If i only place one city it is because i made it happy cap and culture up 2 times.

in my current game i did the adv start with 5000gp.

went 5 cities, 4workers, 2scouts, wheels, mys, mediation, fishing, sailing and masonry.

i think advance starts helps the human player much more then the AI, as I manage to get a faster start out the game then most of the AI who are strugglin gfor cash and research. however both the Dutch and the portugal are doing quite well. Althought that could be because it is a island campaign.

I usually buy techs, a city and a worker. Although im ahead for the beginning, i notice that AIs will usually buy cities and units. I use any remaining gold to bribe people into helping me.
