African Civilizations and City-States

I'm following Civilization VI's civilization design philosophy, wherein civilizations are a coalescence of different polities across different times connected through culture and geography.
You can see this in Indonesia, India, China, Korea and now, thanks to the Leaders Pass, Persia as well. Indonesia as portrayed in the game would more appropriately be called the Majapahit. But the fact that it is called Indonesia makes it possible for a leader like Hasanuddin of Gowa to lead the civilization, thus showcasing Indonesia's multireligious multiethnic history. For Korea you have Seondeok who was only the ruler of one of multiple states that make up Korea. Only recently has the Civilization series acknowledged the post-Achaemenid history of Persia. As for India, I am thinking of making a list of various Indian leaders from across history of different faiths and different kingdoms just to showcase how Indian history is larger than just Ancient India, Mughals and Gandhi.
One reason I like this approach is that we have more leaders and more representations of historical realms at the cost of fewer civilisations. This also allows modders to simply add more leaders to existing civilizations to represent important epochs and polities instead of having to create new civilizations from scratch, or waiting for Firaxis to give us a new civilization.
I need to agree the name Sudan is a possible name for a civ, but maybe Darfur should be better to avoid ambiguity.

Nigeria
Leader: Obafemi Awolowo
Start bias: next to a coast and adjacent to rivers

UA: Riches of Niger Delta - All your strategic resource sources accumulate +1 resource per turn and they grant +2 production and +2 gold if adjacent to rivers. Cities receive +5% growth for each improved strategic resource.

Leader ability: Path to Nigerian Freedom - Cities with governors receive +1 amenity and +1 housing for each base policy adopted in your government. Receives an extra base policy slot when all governors are recruited.

Unique building: Oil Company
Doesn't replace any building, but it's an alternative to the Stock Exchange.
Needs at least one improved oil source in the city.
Available in Refining
+5 gold
+2 gold extra per Specialist in this district.
All oil sources in this city generate +4 gold and +2 production.
Each oil source in this city accumulates +1 resource per turn.
Gains +7 extra gold when powered (base load: 3 power).
However, this building doesn't receive any extra bonuses from city-states and policy cards.
There is a city project in which you can replace a Stock Exchange with an Oil Company when it becomes available.

Unique unit: Ezugwu MRAP - replaces Mechanized Infantry. Has the same strength as Mechanized Infantry, but with an extra +5 combat strenght when fighting barbarians or units of free cities. Also, gains +5 combat strength when fighting inside Nigerian territory.

Nigeria is a populous country that will develop through its natural riches, especially oil, which will guarantee it to be a very flexible nation. Its progressive leader will ensure that his country doesn't fall behind on social and state issues. The Ezugwu MRAP will help Nigeria deal with internal and external setbacks.

Post-Colonial African leaders are depressing, and don't show the best of African culture, history, and civilization, at all.

Really? Benin, Dahomey, and the Ashanti are way cooler than modern Nigeria. But the leader could be the Nigerian Prince, and he will give you gold for free in this game, making Nigeria even better than Gilgachad?

Morocco
Unique Bonus: Al-Maghrebi - Trade routes give 1.5x the bonus if connected to a port city or a desert city.
Unique Unit: Barbary Corsair (Ottomans can get the Janissary) - Replaces privateer. +3 combat strength against port cities.
Unique Building: Souks - replaces market. +5 gold.

Ibn Tumart
Leader Bonus: The Black Army - Units get +3 combat strength when outside of a city center.

Both Dahomey and Benin are on my list and will be done at some point. I had to choose some African postcolonial nations for the thread and I ended up doing Nigeria because it's one of the most important nations in Africa today. I confess that I don't know much about their leaders and I chose Obafemi Awolowo because he seemed less controversial than some others.

South Africa would be better though. You've already got Ashanti, Ghana, Dahomey, and Benin in that area, and the southern half of Africa needs more spots (besides Kongo, Zulu, Madagascar, Shona, and maybe Xhosa or Boers)

I'm quite partial to adovating for the Baganda Kingdom (NOT as Modern Uganda).

Barbary Corsair makes more sense for a civilization based in modern-day Algeria or Tunisia.
Unique Building: Bazaar (Ottomans can get minarets) - replaces market. +5 gold.
I think the Hamam would be a much more suitable option for an Ottoman unique building (as minarets are simply structures attached to mosques and so far as I know weren't separate stand-alone victory monuments in the Ottoman Empire as they were in the Hindustani sultanates).

Buganda would be nice. Hopefully Idi Amin doesn't join the party. The Last King of Scotland is a bit of a villain.

Yeah, well Morocco is kinda one of the Barbary Coast states. Maybe some kind of Berber Cavalry unit.

Bazaar is a Persian word, which is also used to described market places in Turkey.
Arabic speaking people and North Africans, like Morocco, would call them Souks, not Bazaars.

South Africa is also on my list and I already have some ideas for it. And I took Ghana off my list and replaced it with Dahomey.

South Africa has the same problem as any other Sub-Saharan Post-Colonial Nation - except arguably Ethiopia - and the same problem as Gandhi's India. They're all Colonial constructs carrying on jarringly and dysfunctionally in a Post-Colonial hackjob form, and are not a natural expression of those areas' or peoples' true historical legacy and cutural best.

Sorry. I just think that Mandela would be cool in game, maybe 10-20 years from now.

I feel like South Africa with Mandela is the most likely post-colonial country from Africa to get in. Depending on the release date of Civ 7, and the longer development time between iterations, I could possibly see enough time pass for him to be included in Civ 8? :dunno:.

South Africa is not bad, I still think its biggest problem is the name - How would a civ be from "the south" if it appears in the north of the map? :p

About as well as Australia not always starting on the continent of Australia, or America not being on a continent with the name America in the game. :p
