After 1.61 patch, English language/alphabet lost

I recently bought Civ IV (an English version in the U.S.) and installed it. Had lots of problems w/ slow speed, audio stuttering, etc., but thankfully at least everything was in English. I read about the 1.61 patch and downloaded it from the 2k games site and installed it. Now when I start up the game, all the menus appear to be in a non-Latin-alphabet language (oriental? Arabic?) that I cannot read. I clicked on one selection that appeared to roll the credits for the game, but all the characters were simply blue boxes. I checked the Coniguration .ini file and language was set to 0 (English). Can anyone tell me what happened and how to fix it? Thanks.

As a new member of this forum I had hoped for something slightly more helpful. Anyone else have an idea?

Note that 1.74 is the latest patch. So install that, see if it fixes your problem, and if that doesn't work, do a complete reinstall of the game.
