After applying 1.74 patch game no longer runs

I have hit the before, but for the life of me cannot remember how I fixed it.

Had to reinstall the game last night on Windows XPSP3 laptop.

I already renamed D3DX9 and what not, but its doing that insipid crash just as its loading the python now.

Downloading DirectX10 right now.

Will also see if there is a driver update for my video card while I am at it.

Sod it all......no luck.....

Guess I have to wait until I get access to both disks and reload the entire thing.

Stupid patch.....I will see what versions of the various patches I can find I suppose, try to find one that does not kill the game.
