Well, Mining is usually the one to pair with Sid's, as they're the first two up and complement each other nicely. I guess civfanchambers didn't have a GE to found it.

You are absolutely correct. I had no GE, nor any on the horizon, so I went with Civilized Jewelers. I was going for a space victory which would have had faster built parts. But CJ allowed me to get fast techs. An extra 10+ gold per city let me run 100% research with a great gold surplus letting me bank lots of gold. All that gold let me fast build the industrial/modern era infrastructure to build the spaceship. If you don't have Mining corp to add hammers, then you need to go with extra gold to quickly build.

    - active workers outside your cultural territory won't wake up when they are in danger.
    - a lot of misclicking happens because of the zoom angle in main map. Playing in the satellite mode it almost never happens.

That itself is also a reason why many units get easily lost when exploring.

I always thought Asoka was a woman until AP World History in 9th grade after about 3-4 years of playing

While I had not heard of many of the more "exotic" leaders (Mansa, Pacal etc.) before I played the game, I knew about Asoka (very important figure in the history of india and of buddhism). But I would not have known in 9th grade (history focused on Europe), I probably was in my 30s when I first read about Asoka.

Shoot, I never heard of a bunch of the leaders, and probably a couple of the civs. And here I was thinking I was smart. Never heard of Asoka, Pacal, or HC. (Atahualpa I knew, but not his dad). Never heard of Suryavarman or the Khmer. (When I first got into BtS I was trying to figure out what the devs were thinking about, having the Khmer Rouge in the game.) Don't think I'd ever heard of Saladin, or Brennus, or Qin Shi Huang, or Zara, and oh wow this is getting embarrassing. I'd heard of the country of Mali, but I had no idea they used to be a major empire. As for Mansa Musa- I just found out while looking something up for this comment that Mansa isn't his first name...

    Spoiler :
    Difficulty: American public school... :shake:

It was a 'woo-hoo!' moment when I discovered that a Great General keeps his accumulated XP when upgraded...

Prior to that I had stacked obsolete GG's with up-to-date bodyguard units and rarely exposed them to combat.

I found out, that rushes work well, siege-warfare works well, but what almost doesn't work at all is early classical war with Swords but without cats. Took 12 cities with Immortals, 12 losses. Founded at least 3 cities afterwards, so had 15 cities. Next time I looked at the losses was when I had 20 cities. I had lost 15 Swords and 3 Axes and 2 Horse Archers for those 5, so every city costed me 3 Swords, 1 Axe and 0.66 HA. That's more expensive than a Settler, although the conquered city ofc. is also better than a newly founded one, but still I think that even in Spaceraces, one should beeline Construction and go for it directly after Currency, so before CS and stuff.
Swords btw. prooved to be really bad units, often had only 10-20% chances against a fortified Axe in a city. Would have thought that they're way better, because I've read from many good players, that they use Swords heavily in many games.

One of the biggest issues in classical warfare for me has always been how OP Axes are, which is bad both for gameplay and historical accuracy. Even just decreasing their strength to 4 would do wonders to buff swords in comparison.

Chariots can easily kill axes though

Yes, but they are the only counter to axes.

Compare this to real life: Imagine a dozen guys with axes charging a dozen guys with swords or a dozen guys with spears on an open field, all with about the same quality of body armor. Who do you imagine would win? Spears are absurdly underpowered in this game.

Melee vs Melee that is probably true, but Spears certainly don't feel underpowered if you are facing them with horses

Overall I think the balance in the game is pretty good.

Wait, what? Really? So a GG Maceman with 37xp can be upgraded into a Rifleman and keep all 37 xp… and then get upgraded later into an Infantry with the same XP (plus whatever was accumulated since the last upgrade)?

I completely agree that from the perspectives of common sense or historical accuracy, Axes are overpowered and Spears underpowered. It would make sense for Axes to have a Strength of 4 and for Spears to get, say, a 25% bonus against Melee units. It would certainly more accurately reflect the relative crudity of pre-sword bladed warfare and the historically awesome power of massed ranks of spearmen.

However, I long ago gave up on trying to understand the historical accuracy or real-world mechanics of Civ as anything more than an entertaining diversion or thought experiment. As soon as you see something incongruous, you see more and more until nothing in the game makes sense. Civ is a system of overlapping metaphors as a vehicle for strategy, not a simulation of anything really, and to that end, the Warriors/Archers/Spears/Axes/Swords/Chariots/Horse Archers phase of units is decently balanced for gameplay.

One of the first things I noticed about civ4 units in combat is how it feels like rock, paper, scissors. Every unit needs a counter, even if it's not historically accurate.

Yes. GG units do not reset to 10 XP when upgraded, they keep it all...

I remember one Samurai GG who racked-up 63 XP but became increasingly cowardly as he gathered promotions and insisted on being escorted everywhere by more modern units. He began his career as General Mikasa but was later nicknamed General Niwatori (chicken) by the army.:D

One of my grumbles about unit abilities and promotions is spearmen/pikes not having access to Guerilla but able to get Woodsman. This is highly inaccurate as spearmen often deployed on hills, especially if facing mounted troops.

Pikes capable of becoming elite forest fighters? They should be penalised for that terrain, not rewarded.

If your opponent has Axes and you got Chariots, it's likely that your opponent will also got some Spears.
