Against All Odds: The Struggles of the Noyyau

1. House Florentanius would like express its sympathies for the members of the workers who were senselessly slaughtered by the Picts. Those workers' families are now brothers in loss to House Florentanius and so many others. Their deaths and the deaths of the thousands of brave men and women of Noyyau and her armed forces will be avenged.
2. Franz Florentanius has decided that Odilo Florentanius will act as the regional commander of the Watch of House Florentanius for the lands that are now under the control of the Picts.
3. House Florentanius is currently seeking the permission of His Majesty King Reinhard to sponsor a program to devastate the war efforts of the Picts. Due to the nature of the program details will be sketchy and few.

The King shall meet with House Florentianus emissaries to further discuss this "program".

The House of Giacola has enlisted some of its members who currently have no position within the bureaucracy to be spies in this war against the Picts. We have already gotten the jump in training the to speak Pictish and some customs of the culture. We simply need His majesty's permission to move them onto Pictish land.

King Reinhard gives his blessing to these brave children of Giacola, willing to risk their lives among the enemy.

Kami Yata of House Spirictum is offering his most regarded spiritual blessings to any person who is brave enough to act as a Noyyau spy on Pictish lands, especially in freeing the Bulgarian Nation from Pictish rule. Kami Yata acknowledges House Giacola efforts, which is a great deed to the Realm.

Engaging in interesting Diplomatic Relations with the Assyrians is advised by House Spirictum. Even if it seems a bit disadvantageous to us, we should try to do as many trade deals as possible with them.

Another issue that should be adressed is the war against the Moroccans. If we are not mistaken, the last status of their war against the Picts was still a strong invasion led by the Picts. If that's so, peace is strongly encouraged towards that pitiful nation. If they're not in war anymore however, peace is suggested, although not essential.

To end this report, House Spirictum strongly encourages development towards seafaring, so we may start to settle these new lands that we have been finding and incorporate even more settlements to the Spirits of Noyyau.

The Profit Seeker sailed further north, looking for a way around the Venetian landmass. However, as was the case with the frozen highlands between Latvia and Spain, the route was blocked by endless and deadly ice covering the ocean, stretching beyond the horizon.

Grand Lady Hansa, the matriarch of the House of Giacola, was dying. Age and stress had taken a heavy toll on her body, but her mind remained sharp as ever.
Knowing she did not have much time left, she called the most trusted member of the House, her grandson, to her bedside. With her last strength, she outlined to him her plans for a Merchant League, an alliance for the protection and benefit of its member traders, especially those engaged in maritime commerce.
Membership would be acquired with an annual fee, or given as a gift to those deemed worthy. Member traders would gain benefits both economical and legal.
Courts would be established in the major Noyyau cities to deal specifically with issues of commerce, and a national court would preside over them.
Such an enterprise would employ great numbers of House Giacola bureaucrats, and bring unprecedented wealth to the entire nation.
Not much time later, after the funeral of the Lady Hansa, her grandson fulfilled her last wish, and inaugurated the Hanseatic League during a grand ceremony in Noyyau.
Spoiler :

Despite the many social inequalities plaguing Noyyau society, its population enjoyed a relatively high literacy rate, and new public libraries were constantly being opened even in towns that were little more than trading outposts.

Spoiler :

Tehran's rebels did not manage to gather much support, and were quickly dealt with by the city's garrison.
Spoiler :

Isfahan's Hindu revolutionaries, however, were able to obtain much better weapons, and their fanaticism proved to be a problem for the Noyyau garrison.
Spoiler :

King Reinhard, having just ended the Battle of Fiji against the Picts and fearing another invasion, could only send a small detachment to help against the rebels.
Spoiler :

The situation near Isfahan reached a standstill. The Iranian rebels knew they couldn't take the city head on, and baited the Noyyau garrison forces to come and get them in the open. The garrison would be able to ultimately overwhelm them, but only with horrific casualties, leaving Isfahan undefended for the next wave of rioters to take it.
Spoiler :

House Greek forces took the initiative and hit the Iranian rebels with a surprise attack from the north. While the rebels were trying to regroup, Isfahan's garrison sortied from the city and dealt them the final blow.
Spoiler :

Spoiler :

The first invasion had been defeated, but the war was far from over. What did the future hold for the Noyyau?

The agents who recovered the bodies have confirmed earlier suspicions; Lady Ava Florentanius was not among them and is likely still in Pictish custody.

He served his country in the military for many years, and helped to destroy the Spanish and the Latvians. Noyyau scouts reported a very limited Pict presence in the border region. It was possible that they had moved out most of their troops in the hope that their invasion would have been successful, and had no reserves in the vicinity.
King Reinhard moved the army out of Fiji and ordered that all Picts on Noyyau soil must be eliminated.
Spoiler :

The Misfits of House Giacola, having learned of the abduction of Lady Ava Florentianus, offered their help, and followed the tracks of a Pict caravan across the border, towards their border city of Novantae.
With the support of a cohort of Macemen, the Misfits took the Pict defenders by surprise and raided the city.
During the fighting, a lantern oil fire spread to the whole city, and in the confusion any attempts at controlling the fire failed.
Of the Lady Ava, however, the Misfits could find no trace. They captured a few prisoners however, hoping that later interrogation would reveal the Lady's fate.

This allowed for even more trading deals to be concluded.
Spoiler :

Not even waiting for the Noyyau to leave the area, the Picts sent the refugees from Novantae back to their city's ruins, giving them a token military escort. The Noyyau did not waste the chance to capture some slaves, though the Picts sold their lives dearly.
Spoiler :

Possibly due to the recent deals with the Pakistani, their friends and protectors, the Apaches dialed down somewhat their hostility towards the Noyyau, accepting to declare war against the Moroccans, in exchange for a food shipment and some gold.
Their inexperience in such matters became evident to the Noyyau when the Apaches readily agreed to such a deal, not realizing that their declaration of war against the Moroccans would block the only route through which they would receive the agreed upon food shipments...
Spoiler :

Noyyau sympathizers among the Pict Shinto faithful reported that the main Pict army had not moved from the Moroccan front in some time. Unsure of the reason, nevertheless the Noyyau evaluated that several Pict cities would fall, before these troops would be able to reach the battlefield.
Spoiler :

After their devastating defeat at the Battle of Fiji, envoys sent by the Pictish King attempted to negotiate a truce with the Noyyau, offering to pay for war reparations.

Negotiations quickly broke down after that, the Noyyau diplomats adamant that no peace might be reached before the safe release of any noble hostages held by the Picts.

I, the current patriarch of the House of Giacola thank the House of Florentanius for their condolences, and the honor of a courthouse for the previous matriarch in Zapotec. As for your wish to purchase membership, you maybe happy to know that as a member of the House of Nobles that the King invites to govern, you already have permanent membership, only able to be stripped by the king himself. There is no need to pay the fee except as a matter of patriotism.

The Susanoo surveyed the Canadian coastline, while maintaining an eastward heading. Local natives attempted to board the ship with hostile intent, but were repelled without significant casualties to the Noyyau navigators.
Spoiler :

The Picts only sent small scouting parties into Noyyau territory, and they all suffered a predictable fate.
Spoiler :

Unconfirmed rumors stated that the idea of the so-called “Greek Fire” first occurred to a House Greek alchemist, while on vacation. Said alchemist allegedly was visiting a House Florentianus brewing facility, and, already in a state of advanced inebriation from sampling the brewery's products, made some suggestions regarding possible improvements to the brewing and distillation process. Hearing his ideas being dismissed as “drunken nonsense” and “a threat to the customers' lives”, he vowed to “show them, show them all”.
Setting up shop in Robertia and with funds acquired through dubious means, the stubborn alchemist obtained the first successful batch of his “Greek Brew” in less than a month, in the process obliterating his own workshop and half the neighborhood in a fiery blaze.
Undeterred by such minor accidents, the alchemist finally convinced the leadership of his House to evaluate his concoction. They quickly realized this “Greek Fire”'s military applications, especially for siege machinery and in naval combat.

Outlaws from the settlements north of Spain gathered to raid Zapotec's fertile valley. A Cohort of Longbowmen was quickly sent to man the Nothern Spanish Fort, stopping the bandits' advance, but no further reinforcements could be spared, leaving the situation unresolved.

Spoiler :

The NNS Victory headed west on a course parallel to the Fearless Surveyor, only further north, discovering an Indian army overlooking their recently (and violently) acquired new vassal, the Toltecs. The Indians were another civilization of whom the Noyyau had known since ancient times.

A lone Moroccan Galley was encountered by the Staring into the Abyss cruising in Pakistani waters. The Staring's crew explained to the Moroccans the bleak truth of the pointlessness of life.

Spoiler :

During an ill-fated attempt at capturing some native slaves, the crew of the Profit Seeker were ambushed by the Cubans. None ever made it home alive.
Spoiler :

The Fearless Surveyor reached the borders of Lithuania and spotted Indian territory as well. Only when all the explorers' maps would be composited, after their return to Noyyau, would the questions arise: just how big was India? Was this proof that the world was indeed round?
Spoiler :

Upon sighting the approaching Noyyau invaders, the Picts quickly retreated behind the safety of Damnonii's walls, leaving behind only a few stragglers. With a larger garrison and much better defenses than Taezali, the siege of Damnonii promised to be a longer and much bloodier affair.
Spoiler :

The Giacola Rogues' investigations bore fruit, and they returned to Noyyau with evidence that the Lady Ava Florentianus had been kidnapped under orders from someone very close to the Pict Royal Family, though they found no clue yet regarding the motives of such actions.

Spoiler :

Lord Aaron wishes to apologize for the burning of the homes by our junior member. We will pay the damages posthaste.
I have no love for this alchemist's piss, but I suppose it might be useful.

1. House Florentanius would like to evaluate the use of this so-called "Greek-Fire". If the house leadership is interested they would be willing to hire the alchemist. In doing so House Florentanius would pay for the damages incurred by the fire and build a larger workshop, well outside the city, in which he would be able to have other employees and apprentices learn the art of making this substance.
2. House Florentanius would like to thank the members of House Giacola who risked their lives to bring us such wonderful news of Lady Ava's safety as well as proof that she is in Pict royal custody; now we will not stop pursuing this until the lady has been returned to us.
3. House Florentanius would like to strongly condemn the Picts actions in abducting and slaughtering thousands of innocent Noyyau citizens.
4. House Florentanius would like to remind the Picts that so long as they hold Noyyau citizens hostage there cannot and will not be peace.
5. House Florentanius would like to, with great pleasure, announce the expansion of their operations into farming, forestry, slavery, road-building and land development. To this end House Florentanius will be purchasing large amounts of land and slaves from military encampments and conquered cities. These slaves will be put to work under heavy guard and will rebuild infrastructure around the cities as well as develop the land further than the previous occupiers.
Spoiler :
OOS:
Build a few workers and put them in a stack with a House Florentnaius Watch. Then we can have them follow behind the army rebuilding the improvements and roads around the Pict cities that have been destroyed. If you capture any Pict workers they can be sent to where you need them or to the stack.

Kami Yata believes that this so called Greek Fire is the gift given to us by Basan, the fire-breathing bird kami, and although we must be cautious with its use, we should not fear it. It'll be a great weapon against our enemies.

Also, peace with the Moroccans is still the opinion of House Spirictum. We fear that there is a higher chance of the Moroccans to capitulate to the Picts if they have 2 strong enemies against them, and less chances if one of these enemies (us) turns into a friend, and keeps attacking both nations' common foe, the Picts.

House of Giacola magistrates from the courts of commerce have been discussing the penalties of the new laws and have decided that instead of sending offenders to prison and overcrowding the institutions, instead these prisoners will endure some time of forced labor in a system known as convict leasing. These prisoners will be auctioned off at low prices. The House of Giacola asks that purchasers keep the convicts alive until the end of their sentence though there currently no penalties for not doing so.

House Florentanius is very interested in this 'convict leasing'. Representatives from House Florentanius would like to meet with magistrates from the courts of commerce to discuss the potential for leasing a large number of convicts for use on the supply lines to the Pict lands as well as on the house's vineyards and farms where they will learn valuable skills and become productive members of society. If the convicts wish they may apply for a job with the manager of the facility upon their release. Having experience, training and a prior relationship with the manager they will be given special consideration.

For the first time in their whole history, the Noyyau began looking at their mountainous regions with more than just indifference. Teams of Workers were sent to build roads leading to higher than ever before, and prospectors began looking for useful minerals.

Lord Greek did not seem to be a very patient man.
Spoiler :

Under the “protection” of the House Florentianus Watch, teams of Worker frantically constructed new roads to allow rapid movements and communications in former Pict territory.
Spoiler :

The conquest of Damnonii opened up a more direct land route to Assyria. Despite the dangers, House Florentianus Alcohol merchants seized the opportunity to expand into a new market.
Spoiler :

A skirmish near the recently conquered Damnonii brought unexpected news: among the prisoners there were some Iranian Hindu expatriates, who after some “questioning” revealed to be advisors to some very important people close to the Pict King. Though they did not know about Lady Ava Florentianus' current location, they did admit that the Lady had been kidnapped because she had discovered something that she should not have. The nature of this secret, however, they did not reveal, even after an entire night of torture.
Spoiler :

Eager to make a name for himself, Lord Greek decided to keep attacking Epidii.
Spoiler :

The true nature of the world was finally confirmed when the Susanoo and the Staring into the Abyss met each other off the Ottoman coast. Both Caravels had started their respective journeys from Tehran, though in opposite directions. Such a historical encounter could only mean one conclusion: the world was indeed round.

A provisional world map was drawn by combining the maps and reports of the various Noyyau explorers.
