end of industrial era, i hadn't started researching radio. map was already known by everyone, obviously. and i get offered this sweet deal...

well if this can happen to the player, guess how much techs trade for between AIs

Great! This finally proves what we all have known for some time already. I have only been able to buy techs for 1 gold.

I've never got techs that cheap, that far into the game, only in the ancient era can I get techs for a map OR a Right of Passage. I see on your picture there were some small areas of ocean yet uncovered. The AI seems to value maps totally on how many tiles they reveal, regardless whether or not they reveal anything useful (like an unclaimed island).

actually i didn't do any exploration whatsoever (got map from ai, a long time ago)and the entire map is uncovered already. normal sized map, end of industrial age, all oceans squares are already known. the lighter parts on the minimap are shallow waters.

wait, i got what you were saying. there were a few black spots on the minimap. i couldn't have uncovered any new squares though, my ships only travelled between my brown russian island and the cyan chinese island in a direct line to land invasion forces. great game by the way, i'm way smaller but since i have the hoover dam i'm actually #1 in production, so i'll fight the war of attrition to the end.

i find this happens a lot, even in the early phases. I was on an island alone, researching monarchy. For about 600 gold and maps and crosstrading techs, i made it all the way to monotheism-picked up republic, construction, etc, etc. I second the request for what graphics mod is being used.

in one on my game the first turn after i meet with the russia they gave me a tech:)

In my experiences the computer offer u a tech really cheap when you are almost done researching it. I've had computer players gave me a tech for 1 gold because i'm 1 turn away from getting it through research.(and it saved me 1 turn's time :) ) I'm not sure if this was meant to happen or if there are other factors i missed but this is what happened to me.

I was just playing a few hours ago, and I decided to trade Alexander for some techs - he had three I didn't have. The first one he was pretty steep on. Some gold, a luxury, and a map. Then for no reason at all he sold me both of the next two for one gold each. I think he was annoyed with me, so it wasn't like we were great friends. I had lots of money to pay, too, so he could have got a lot more out of me. I don't know what that was about.

Yes, like someone said, they usually do that when you're almost done (what? the AI _knows_ when you're almost done????).. OR when he's about to go to war with you, and knows the tech is worthless to you:

In a quick game I played yesterday, as Egypt, there were no horses in my territory, and I still didn't have iron working. The romans give me horseback riding for nothing !!!!! and they were polite, so I accept. The same turn, they declare war and I have to face tons of legionaires with Archers and Spearmen... (I still won the war though and I took nearly half of their cities, and a few more with my culture once the war was done ;) )
