AI agent multiplayer opponent

Just curious if anyone's experimented with making and training an AI agent to play in multiplayer games in the place of the game's AI opponent. I know that people have done versions of this for Skyrim. This is really outside my wheelhouse, but it seems like a challenging and unpredictable AI--especially one that you could chat with as a form of diplomacy--would breathe a lot of life into the game.

Haven't even thought of that. Based on what I'm using I don't think the LLMs are there yet -- at least not for a layperson like myself. Maybe 2026 though. . . wild how fast it's improving.
