So then I have only one direction to expand to - the coasts or into land that is also being claimed by another civ, this makes expansion a fraught and mad race to build settlers and its starting to wear me down. Is it just a run of bad luck?

I use the fractal map type, normal size.

Map type might contribute. Pangaea or Continents maps you're almost certain to have somewhere to expand early on.

Rather than race to settle you could go for an early war, its worth it if the other civ is 1 that will give you trouble later on anyway

I've got one word for you, just one word: Axerush.

    Axemen solve everything.

And if you don't have copper nearby, well, that's bad luck.
