Has anyone ever gotten a gracious attitude from a civ? I've helped, and by helped I mean saved, whole civs before, and they don't like my because I had to put some units in thier terrirtory to do it.

my first real full length game, I didn't have a single saltpeter in my boarders, and the closest one was at the very far edge of my rival's territory. (we shared a continent.) Japan, on a continent below me, was perhaps the worst nation in the world, but I saw they had two or three saltpeters. I gave them every tech they needed to "see" saltpeter, in order to let me buy it from them. Incidentally, I earned their "gracious" attitude.

Boy, that AI sure knows how to suck up. I then used the saltpeter to conquer most of England, giving me saltpeter, and in the meantime Japan becomes a world power and soon loses its gracious attitude, eventually making demands of me enough that we go to war. There was only ten turns left, though, so nothing but our boats ever fought, before I won a histograph victory

Before i started to play with the backstabbing style I use now, it was easy to get AI civs to be gracious toward me. Just give another civ a gold or two after every negotiation and eventually they seem to come around. However, once you develop a dominant position in the game it seems much harder to appease them. Therefore, I don't bother. Once i have decent defenses in place i rarely care about other civs attitudes toward me

Two games, one a small game and I sucked up.. got a couple of gracious ones. for short periods.
Joan of Arc became gracious in my last game when I game her a city I founded on her continent, and then gave her tech for steam.
But, then I got too powerful, and she quickly became annoyed...

To hell with the enemy if they have something you want TAKE IT from them using extreme force

Signing a multiple protection pact and then getting dragged into a war makes them gracious. Also in my current game, i'm playing tech broker, and i have some 7-8 civs gracious towards me and i haven't given anyone a single gift. The lot of them are giving some 1500+ gold per turn though after expenses are taken out. :D

Ever wondered why they are annoyed the first time you speak to them (at least on harder levels)...shouldn't they be as curious, as I am to meet a new civ?

I have found that I get "gracious" conferred to our relations when I make peace with a civilisation that I have all but ground to dust...

Joan's a sweetheart. She's the only one who's ever been gracious to me without us fighting a common enemy.

I once played as the Babylonians, had only one war the whole game and I tried to make friends with everyone. When I had built the UN three of the seven civs were gracious towards me the rest polite. At the first UN vote, I got six of the seven votes.

The only one in this world who is not annoyed or furious with me now is England. Don't really know why. Rome was polite, almost gracious while we had an alliance vs Iroqouois. Funny thing, I have only been at war with Rome, Iroq and Zulu. Aztec marched troops through m y land nostop until I finally got strong enough to be willing to fight him (He is still #1, and 200 points ahead of me) but at the same time I was willing to threaten him, he stopped sending troops through without being asked.... Now is is cautious, no longer annoyed. Iroquois remain furious, and tested my by sending settlers through... withdrew on demand, "My people will leave hated Greece immediately. GRRR. "

I've only played on chieftain & a couple of warlord games, but it seemed to be I got "gracious" attitudes more often on the warlord games then the easier ones. Once Greece was so gracious to me they came off like a suck up lackey it was almost sickening and then there was India who was gracious to me one round then beating on me like an unwanted red haired step child the next. so I'm not even sure if a gracious attitude is all that good to have
