I'll start of with an intro :)
So I decided to pickup CIV2 again. It must be 10 years ago when I last played this game. Probably when civ3 got released. I was never a big fan of civ2. More a civ1 and 3 fan. And later Civ IV also proved to be a great game.
Civ2 somehow never left a crushing impression on me, allthough everytime I read about civ2 people were saying it was the best civ... so here I am :)

I can't seem to find any info about the AI behaviour. I assume Genghis Khan will be very aggresive, but there has to be hard info about AI behaviour somewhere?
I always find it interesting to know :)

When you enter the diplomacy screen for an AI leader, it will contain some rough description of their tendencies such as Civilized, Perfectionist, Expansionist and Warlike. I honestly do not recall whether the individual civs always have certain characteristics.

Diplomatically, the AIs tend to all function about the same. Early in the game they will be neutral or even friendly toward you. As you grow more powerful they will become less friendly. If you are playing the Multi-player Gold Edition (MPG), the AIs will become intractably hostile once you reach the Renaissance. If you are playing Civ2 Classic, they will still get hostile, but not so ridiculously hostile as with MPG. When playing MPG you will always be at war with everyone after a certain point, only able to make peace for one turn at a time. With Classic, you can maintain peace until much later in the game.

Typically, you will want to trade maps with as many AIs as possible. This requires both civs having Map Making and their attitude being at least Enthusiastic. They will always trade if you get them to Worshipful. To improve their attitude towards you, give them technologies.

And remember, this is civ 2. Trade breaks the game. Build camels; Build them early and build them often.

Welcome Kwibuss. I llike civ2 better than civ1, and civ1 better than civ3, though I haven't played it much, and civ45 not at all. I play for conquest, which means I don't usually care much about AI attitudes, so I'm probably not the ideal guy to answer you. But....

Each AI has certain permanent traits, such as rational, aggressive, expansionist, etc. You can see these in the F3 window once you have an embassy with that civ. These are probably also available in some threads or manuals - not sure. In principle, these determine which techs they value most, whether they tend to produce settlers or armies, whether they tend to join alliances or to attack everyone. So, landing players [who care more about peace with the AI] prefer not to play with Genghis, for example. Personally, I haven't noticed that much differerence in the AI's.

Another variable measures the AI's attitude towards you, based mainly on how you have treated that AI [made gifts? sneak attacks?], and maybe even the other AI, and maybe your power rating. This affects AI decisions on whether to cooperate with you on tech trades, gifts, etc, or to make war. Some bug in the Multiplayer Gold Edn causes this variable to sink very fast for no reason, so that the AI is almost always hostile to you.

You asked for ``hard info'' ... meaning actual statistical data on this ? I don't think anyone has studied that, but if you have some specific issue, such as how to get AI maps, or tribute, etc, there are many threads on those topics.

Edit; I saw Terrapin's post after posting mine. I agree.

Welcome Kwibuss. Like Peaster, I llike Civ2 better than Civ1. I have not played Civ3 enough to have a definite opinion but what I have seen was not so great. I have not played Civ4 or Civ5 at all.

For a detailed list of the AI characteristics see http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=117233

These characteristics are permanent and will not change based on game settings.
