Island maps. My island is near AI civ island. The coastal squares are adjacent but don't actually connect. AI civ can move workboats, galleys, triremes, etc. through connection but I can't. What gives?

i can't picture what you're describing, can you post a screenshot?

they changed it in BtS so that now your "cannot enter ocean" ships can't go on ocean tiles in someone else's culture even with OB like they used to. so i had a case recently where shaka could reach me by galley thanks to a one-peak island giving him a coastal connection to his culture border. but i couldn't reach him, since the island only gave me a connection to ocean tiles in his border. luckily he did not take advantage of this situation to pound me into the ground.

doesn't sound like that's what you mean tho?

What you're describing sounds like what is happening to me, but I don't understand why it's a one-way thing. If he has the connection, shouldn't I?

Let me be more specific. The AI ship passes from a coastal tile on his island to a coastal tile on my island, without a coastal connection with my island. He is moving from a tile within his cultural borders to a tile that is in nobody's cultural borders. When I try to do the same thing (whether with OB or when declaring war, doesn't matter) I can't enter his coastal tile. It's a one-way path, at least for me, apparently.

Here is a screenshot from an earlier point in the game, before he got the cultural borders to the square. My galley can't go in the direction the AI galley came from.

i think he's passing thru an ocean tile, not pure coast. he's allowed to since it's within his borders, but you weren't of course. i can't tell from the screenshot whether it's coast or ocean. you do say that's from earlier, before he got culture access. did he come from there that early, or only after he got culture? if only after, i'd bet you a great prophet there's not a "coast-only" connection there. turn tile yields on is the best way to tell, ctrl-y.

it sounds bizarre that it can be one way but it's true. and not necessarily fair . here's how it worked in my game:

shaka's yellow, i'm green. those 3 squares that i marked with o are ocean tiles that he's allowed to sail into (because they're in his borders) but i can't enter, even with OB (because of the BtS rules change). and with those two little single-tile islands there, he actually has a coastal connection now to my entire continent ! meanwhile i can't even get close enough to see his cities til i can make caravels because there weren't any convenient islands like that in the reverse. waaaaaaaaah i don't know why they changed that rule. i expanded that direction earlier than i'd planned to once i found out he was so close and able to send settlers on galleys if he wanted to *giggle*.

so he gets to go through ocean squares with galleys because the ocean squares are within his cultural borders?
Exactly. And no one else's galleys gets to go through the ocean squares within his borders under any circumstances.

This AFAIK is a BTS change..... isn't it?
Yes, IIRC it went like this:

Vanilla: you could enter ocean squares within your own borders as well as within friendly AI's borders.

Warlords: you could enter ocean squares within anyone's borders (even your enemies').

BtS: you can enter ocean squares only within your own borders.

No wonder it has confused a lot of people. :crazyeye:

i love that workboats can enter the ocean after astro now so i can set them from other cities. but this change, i don't understand it. after having been in my map situation above, where shaka could reach all of my cities and i couldn't reach any of his, not even to pillage fishing boats if we'd been at war. if i'd gotten optics i could send him missionaries or spies, sure, but no military.

if he declared war on me with that map, the terrain makes it so that he can send as many troops over on as many galleys as he wants to, and all i can do is try to sink the galleys, and go on defense. the map combined with the new rule don't let me have the same options he has until astronomy. that's no fair /whine. but luckily i convinced him to be my friend, so it wasn't an issue :)

r_rolo: oh my games can take a long time! this one, i play it only in spurts, between other stuff, but i will report when i'm done. so far, 1 vassal and izzy had 2 cities left last night but i fell asleep in my chair so i couldn't get rid of her before bed, had to save it and stop "one more turn"ing. i'm so totally slaughtering them in tech it isn't fair (which is of course the only way i'm capable of slaughtering anybody in a war *giggle*). so much good luck in the beginning of that game! especially that shaka didn't take advantage of the HUGE advantage the map and this new rule change gave him ;).
