I can't believe after all the supposed "improvements" they've made to the AI, it's still not smart enough not to embark troops right next to my naval units.

Yup. The strangest thing is there are times when I'm thinking I'm seriously SOL. As in I have no defending units left (other than a few triremes on the coast, my city is in the red line and the AI has three or four units approaching the city (IOW I'm expecting to lose the city). So what does it do? It embarks all the melee units, allowing my Navy to kill them effortlessly, leaving only the catepult which of course can't capture cities. This has happened repeatedly and thus makes warfare on island maps relatively easy even on high levels. OTOH, the AI has gotten better IMO on purely land based combat (where the terrain prevents it from embarking) but the coders have to fix the AI's tendency to embark whenever they see water (even if my Navy is right beside it just waiting for such easy kills). Either that, or bring transports.

I wish they could sort this out, I thoroughly enjoy water maps but for these diabolical AI warfare tactics. I discipline myself to never pick off an embarked unit but do allow myself to bombard them, even then 40% damage seems very harsh from a trireme attacking a rifleman!

I agree, I think it's hard not to agree here.

Embarked units should not be able to be erased simply by running them down with naval units. Ever. Period.

This is a ridiculous mechanic on so many levels, a huge AI handicap where it already faces enormous disadvantages and the main reason I don't play continents or any water maps. Bombard them, fine. But poof! Not even one hit-point for a caravel sinking a transport carrying a tank batallion???

A total mystery to me how this exploit/bug remains unpatched after a year.

Yep, I've seen this too, even after the 383 patch the AIs don't see the danger of embarking units right next to enemy ships.

Also, I read that the latest patch was supposed to make it so the AI didn't send great generals out on their own either, but only today I saw Washington's first move after I declared war, was to move his general, unescorted, right towards my troops that his AI could clearly see on his border.

I wonder sometimes if the devs have just given up on trying to perfect Civ5 and are just milking money out of DLC before they move on to their next project and forget all about it...

Well this could be fixed to not let units be instantly destroyed if a naval unit goes at the tile...

Just like rise of nations you can fire on embarked units (thats where they got there inspiration of)
with you're naval to weaken or kill them...

Is there any way a mod can change this mechanic, or is that buried in the exe somewhere?

I'm still upset that we don't have access to the "core" (and that there is so much stuff locked up inside of it), despite the promises of how "mod friendly" the game was going to be...

I'd like to see all nations given a weaker form of Askia's ability. Let them defend at 50% strength, or even a quarter.

That would kind of wreck the already worthless point of having a navy.

The only way to fix this is that naval units can't destroy embarked units in one hit I found it actually really unbalallenced you can destroy a hole fleet of units with just one ship they should let the ship fire at the units and do heavy dammage as result you will need a proper navy to defend you'rself not just 2 ships...

Ai will olso be better at naval battles because it wil build more ships

Personally, I don't even think embarkment should be in the game. They should just have 2 unit transport ships.

A prosposal which contradicts the "holy" 1upt rule and would require the ability of coordinated actions.
The first is a key element of the game, the second has not implemented yet, as a view on AI troop movements proves.

I made a related topic on the Ideas & Suggestions Board, and most people seem to agree that the easiest solution is something like free Embarkation with Defense for all embarked units within 2 tiles of a ship/actualnaval unit.

There is a field in GlobalDefines.xml that reads something like "EmbarkedUnitStrength" and which value is at present "0". I was about to change it last night to test it, but as I am also testing something more interesting to me, I did not want to test that right now.

Perhaps you should change it to some value, start a quick accelerated one and report back to us with what you find?

It does not seem to be a percent value, so it smells liek absolute strength, but better something than nothing... change it to a value a little below caravels, and tell us what happens.

Thats what crack, er i mean steam will do to a gaming company. Same thing happened with the total war series. Empires Total War was an absolute joke. Sure it was shinier than the last, like Civ 5 is, but the AI was just horrendous. Devs were incredibly aloof for a long time, pumping out crap DLC that should have been in the game anyhow and then released Napoleon Total War. I personally voted with my wallet not to buy Napoleon because of what Empires was like. Civ 5 is cruising in the same direction,..,
