This was sort of brought up before, but I was wondering if anyone has ever tracked what techs each different leader beelines for usually.

I find for instance that Catherine ALWAYS gets writing long before anyone else. In my games anyway. I wonder if it changes by difficulty, or if it is just random and Cat has just done that purely by luck each time.

I started a thread here a while ago observing that Tokugawa always seems to be first to Compass in my games (it always seems to be the last time he gets a tech before anyone else; after that he really stagnates). What could he possibly use it for? Building harbours to increase revenue from the foreign trade routes he doesn't have? Recruiting explorers to find new civilisations to ignore? Contemplating "I could trade this tech to everyone else and rectify my dire technological shortcomings; shall I do it? Nah!" ? What on earth does he want it for?

Others...hmm...Mansa Musa often seems to be first to Metal Casting. That isn't really any kind of surprise.

Toku is a Jerk with big J. He only trades when he is pleased or above with you. But even when he gets pleased he asks you something weird so you say "NO" and he is cautious again. I practically ignore him too. In other hand, mansa musa trades you even when he is annoyed...maybe in furious too but I hardly remember when he is furious with me... it is very hard to achieve :)

But in topic, Peter in my last game had airships with longbowmen :) I don't know why he needs physics so fast?

Mansa Musa is easy to get to furious. He will still trade techs though, that stupid pie...

Physics grant a free GreatScientist and provides the AI with their favorite unit except Corp. Execs.

But when he has longbowmen and he declares war against my infantry/tanks(Robotics in 7 turns) then it doesn't make sence :)

At higher difficulties, Mansa Musa always seems to be the first to research every tech in the game. How does he get so far ahead in almost every game?

This is so true. The AI seems to spam airships and corporate execs and stockpile them incase there is a shortage.

Does anyone know why the AI in BTS can go through the tech tree so quickly while still building so many cities, so fast? If I build as many cities as the AI does, while playing at the same game difficulty as the AI (noble), my economy and research drops so low that I can't keep up my tech research with the AI. Does anyone know what advantage the AI has in BTS that allows them to do so well with research while building so many cities?

Mansa Musa is usually the tech leader because he is Financial, trades techs like a madman and doesn't lose turns switching between civics. He is quite irritating because his Skirmishers make his cities almost impossible to sieze before you get catapults, and by then he probably already has a tech lead on you. Pillaging or spy wars are the best way to deal with him, IMO.

Try getting these three things first.

1. Spiral Minaret
2. Versailles
3. Religious building

Then spread your religion everywhere. You will see a great change in your income.

I asked the question about how the AIs can do so well at research while building so many cities at the same time. Here's a specific example of a multi-player game my buddie and I are playing against two AIs:

* I am playing Huayna Capac (Ican) who is Industrious and Financial.
* My buddy is playing Elizabeth (Philosophical and Financial)
* One of the AIs is Ottoman, Suleiman (Imperialistic and Financial)
* The other AI is Korean, Wang Kon (Financial and Protective)

As soon as one of us gets alphabet, we exchange techs (my buddy and me), yet we can't keep up with Suleiman. Both he and the Korean build cities like crazy, and when we try that, our research and economy drop so low, we can't keep up. By the way, we are all playing at Noble level.

The victory condition in this game is only "Space Race Victory". When we played this game the first time, Suleiman got there first. I had started building my space ship, but was not close to finishing.

We are playing on a huge flat land map with inland sea, starting at ancient tech, and playing in quick mode.

In this game I built almost every wonder you can think of, yet still could not manage to keep up with the AIs with their city spamming. Each of us started so far away from each other that we could not launch an early attack without stretching our forces too thin. No one ever declared war on anyone in this game.

We re-started the game at the beginning and are trying a little different strategy. We want to attach the Ottoman as soon as possible, but we are not even close to being able to do this and he is already ahead of us in tech.

So, what is the best strategy in this particular game for my buddy and I to use against these two tough AI opponents? Thanks for your input.
