The strangest thing happened in a game this evening. I was playing the perfect world script, which is like a form of continents, and an AI Ragnar started on a small island he quickly covered with 5 or so cities, then he built two more cities on a larger landmass, and then he turned his overseas possessions into colonies… and the original five cities instantly turned into his new vassal, America! America quickly broke free of vassalage, since it was more than twice ragnar’s remaining size, and Ragnar was left with just two weak cities on a large continent full of rivals, who quickly killed him.

I’d never seen such a thing before. Maybe the script assumed the larger landmass must be his original continent, and that’s why his first five cities were turned into a vassal civ?

Did Ragnar changed his capital from the small island to a city in the other landmass before creating the colony?

Do AI's ever even build the palace? Ive never seen it before, but perhaps with multiple landmasses it can get triggered bybsome bizzarre calculation?

Perhaps the original capital was captured and then recaptured, thus moving the capital to the new landmass? [This too would be weird as I thought the capital is defaulted post-capture to the next-oldest city, or perhaps its the largest city?]

To the OP: to my knowledge, colonies must exclude the capital, so unless this is a bug in the map script, another mod you use, or there was a capital location change, I don't think this should have been possible.

Alternatively, colonies must have 3 cities, so perhaps AI's are allowed to colony off their capital and thus with 2 cities on the new island, colony-ing the original 5 cities was the inly option.

Interesting theories! To answer some questions:

  • I don’t know if Ragnar changed his capital. I only have the end-of-game time lapse to go by, but I’ve never seen an AI build a palace.
  • The original capital was never captured. Ragnar even had a handful of wonders on his original island that went to his vassal when he turned it into a colony.
  • I’m running BUG and PerfectWorld2, but no other mods.
I might dive in later and rewatch the post game replay to see if it notes Ragnar moving his capital.

I saw an AI building a Palace in another city once when I had loads of espionage against them. I decided to help them move by conquering their original capital, thus saving them the remaining 100 or so hammers they still would have had to invest to complete it. I'm just a helpful neighbor like that. :)
