Was playing as the Natives, and was following a defensive strategy. The AI kept invading with cavalry units through a forested/hilled area. Unfortunately, I possessed no oil within my area so I was unable to build the powerful modern units that would have slaughtered the backwards horse units. I was, however, able to build paratroopers (the modern era cav killers). They all started, of course, with cg1 and fs1, so for awhile I kept running down those two paths. Eventually, however, I struck upon a brilliant idea. I started giving guerilla promotions and planting them on forested hills. As the xp's piled up, I maxed the woodsman and guerilla lines and then later fs lines. My god, they moved and attacked effortlessly through the forested hills (with multiple first strikes and 50% withdrawal ability), and were unkillable in defense. Plus, they healed themselves and everybody else with quickness.

Consider, a g2 and w2 paratrooper parked on a forested hill defends at 300%. That's a strength of 72 (with fs too!). Their's not a single unit in the game that can match that power with any combination of promotions or situations (except for a cr3, c5 modern armor attacking a city at 88). And if you got it to c5 too (maybe instead of the fs), that power jumps to 84.

That's the most perfectly versatile unit imaginable. And consider it's uses, it can paradrop, it can act as a medic, can defend a city (with the free cg and fs promos), can attack and withdraw (50%), move through/defend/attack forests and hills. Wow. Now imagine a squad of these.

The next best unit I've ever built was a samurai upgraded into a MG. It started with c1, cg3 and fs2 but became cg3, fs4 and c5 with medic 2 while parked in a hill city. It would kill dozens of cavalry while taking no damage (and of course took no damage from treb attacks). It defended at 280% (50) against cav, and at 320% (58) against gunpowder--and this with how many first strikes? Simply amazing.

I love that protective trait.

Mind you, if the enemy was at tech parity instead of resticted to obsolete weapons, thing'd be tougher for the lone ranger.

Not really. There's nothing that can achieve a 72 offensive attack against that unit in a forested hill. Even at only 75 (simple hill) or 100 (simple forest) percent for a moving lone ranger the defense would be at 40 or 48, which is higher than any colleague. Only modern armor or a badass attack mech could rival that, and that's at a step above rather than parity. And you could always promote a Guerilla-Ranger Infantry to become mechanized, which would then stomp on a modern armor.

yes, paratroopers are the late unit of choice in Attacko's strategy Guide. Protective as a trait is the best one to have for an airpower Civ. A Marine vs Paratrooper comparison might be good- which promotions equal what level possible- or can a Seal outmatch the power of a paratrooper while giving up some of the latter's versatilty.

couldnt airships/fighters/bombers weaken it to the point that the percentages dont do that much?

Dropping paratroops with woodsman or guerilla into forested hills to distract the AI seems to be their best use.
