All Things Star Trek

We watched the first episode of SNW and didn't much care for it TBH. Same goes for Discovery, Lower Decks, & Prodigy. I don't think we watched more than a couple episodes of any of those shows. Picard was the same, but the nostalgia for TNG prompted us to watch S03, which for us has been the best thing in ST since Enterprise.

SNW was really good - easily the best first season of any Trek show. I'll definitely be watching season two in June.

I looked over Paramount+ to see if it was worth subbing for full price ($10/mo), but there isn't much there for me. I'll probably wait for it to go on sale. Still, SNW s2 might be near the top of the list of things I want to see this Summer.

Paramount+ is my only streaming service, and I found enough on there to keep me entertained. They have a surprisingly good movie selection too.

Watched the first episode of season 2; I found it only okay. Some good moments but it felt like it had some filler. (Which is strange, because usually series premiers are overstuffed.)

Looking over episode titles, it looks like the Lower Decks crossover will be episode 7 "Those Old Scientists" (a joke from Lower Decks referring to TOS).

Star Trek: Prodigy Has Been Cancelled—and Will Be Removed From Paramount+

Paramount+ had previously given the go-ahead to a second season of kid-focused animated series Star Trek: Prodigy, but the series has now been cancelled ahead of that. Additionally, the Hollywood Reporter notes, Prodigy will be removed from the streaming platform altogether.

The surprising decision to remove the series—which will mean a tax write-off for the streamer, a tactic we’ve also seen recently from Disney+ and Warner Bros.—affects a handful of other Paramount+ series beyond Prodigy, including Grease spin-off Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, which just wrapped on June 1. But the Prodigy news cuts especially deep, not least because the series is the first Trek show to end after just one season, but also because a second installment had already been confirmed. Now, that’s obviously not going to happen—at least at Paramount, as THR further noted that the show will “complete post-production on season two...and producers CBS Studios will shop both seasons to a new buyer.”

The reason for it is twofold: 1) that they have to pay royalties to the creators as long as the shows are still "available" on their platform, even if no one watches them. If they perceive the shows as not being worth maintaining on their platform (i.e. generates no clicks/new subscribers but still have to pay royalties for it simply being available) they can pull them for that reason alone.

2) As we've probably all heard about, during the Covid years, most streaming services thought they were invincible & every show would bring in new subscribers. So pretty much every show got an unrealistic "projected revenue" value assigned to them. When reality set in, & people either hated/were indifferent to their shows, & subscribers either plateaued or cratered (Disney+), they faced potential losses. That Projected $ minus Actual $ can be written off*, but only if the show is not offered anymore (else they are held to that made up "projected $" value).

* "written off" just means credited against actual revenue gains from other stuff - like how normal people can "write off" charitable contributions: they count against your actual income from other sources, meaning you pay taxes on the reduced income amount, not that they reduce your tax bill by subtracting from the taxes you owe - you just owe the same taxes on a lower income amount after the write-off/credit; same thing here

This is one of the reasons (the other being editing/censoring of existing content) that I encourage people to keep supporting physical media - your Bluray can never be taken away or edited.

For once, the similar threads feature was useful and showed me this thread from @Blake00: https://forums.civfanatics.com/thre...ris-birth-of-the-federation-like-game.684271/

I have wanted a Birth of the Federation remaster for so long. It is impossible to effectively make it run on modern systems at this point. (I need to look into those fan projects Blake mentioned in his post...) Such a wonderful game.

This is not that, but I'll take it. Star Trek is very, very compatible with 4x. This really does just look like a Stellaris mod, but given the absolute wasteland of Star Trek games since the reboot, I won't turn my nose up at this.

Same with books. Take a look at the offerings for the "classics" on Amazon. There's an "Amazon" edition for some of them.

I have no idea what might have been changed, but I'll take the original unabridged, unedited-for-21st-century-sensibilities version, thanks. Even if it means scouring used bookstores or searching it out on Project Gutenberg.*

*I nearly had to settle for reading The Count of Monte Cristo in French on Project Gutenberg, but thankfully one of the local second-hand booksellers found me an unabridged version in English.

Once I finish the current show I'm watching I plan to finally go and smash S4 of 'Discovery of Infinite Melodrama', S2&3 of 'Patrick Stewart Goes to Space' and then S1&2 of Strange New Worlds (can't give it a funny name if it hasn't disappointed me yet lol). Then I can finally contribute to this thread again as it's been a while. Actually looking forward to it after hearing good things about s3 of Picard, good things about Strange New Worlds, and good news about Discovery getting cancelled lol!!!! :p

Yup Birth of The Federation is probably still my favourite all time Star Trek game ever made (although A Final Unity is very very close). If people follow Synobun's link to my other thread you can see me talk about it and also link to a blog post where I talk about my love for it even more and also about the fan made sequels. They're still going strong and both projects appears to be finally tackling the 3D battle recreation problem as pretty much everything else has been replicated, expanded and is working. There's also a pretty healthy modding scene for original BOTF and there are installers that will get the game working on modern machines in higher resolutions with all sorts of interesting mods (eg ones that add playable Borg & Dominion just like the BOTF2 fan projects are doing) are at the Armada Fleet Command Website.

This interests me. I used to have a hell of a time running the compatibility patchers to just barely get it running on a Windows 7 rig with spit and a dream, only to have it inevitably crash and burn during midgame around the time the first Cube appears. I gave up entirely after that point, relegating the game to imagination only. You make it sound like the problem's been cracked and the game runs smooth as butter. If true...

First ep of Strange New Worlds s.2: So far, so good.

Strange New Worlds s2 three episodes in: good, quite good.

Although I didn't have "Star Trek does a Canada episode for the week before Canada Day" on my 2023 bingo sheet.

Christina Chong in a black leather jacket? Yes, please. :D

Strange New Worlds ep3 was great, it was filmed and took place in Toronto (pronounced Tronnoh). I live 2-3 hours away from this place by car, but I am a season ticket holder of a soccer team there (Toronto FC), and so before the pandemic I would spend 10+ weekends in Toronto a year. So a lot of the places they showed is basically home to me, it was really cool to see. It was also funny how they called it "New York" first.. Toronto is a cheaper place to film, and a lot of filmmakers film New York scenes there. But when you're standing in the middle of the busiest intersection in the city, and when you show the CN tower and other landmarks that obviously.. it actually lead to a really funny to me moment, when she corrected him and told him it's actually Toronto. Because 99% of the time you see Toronto on the screen in a show like this, it will be "New York".

The one issue with it I have is that if cops pulled you over for racing around downtown AND you didn't have a license, they wouldn't just let you walk away like that. You're screwed. It looks like the cops got another call as well, but the line they gave us was something like: "I'll let you off this time", which would never happen. A far more realistic line would have been: "It's your lucky day, there's a bank robbery in progress, we gotta run" or something similar. It was slightly lazy writing.

IM PISSED.

Star Trek Prodigy is super underrated. Hopefully another service will pick up season 2 (which is still being made) so we can at least see it. But like Prodigy is deserving of sooo much better. If Picard could get a third season after if its season 2 so should prodigy.

Anyways there's a change org petition floating around if you wanna sign. I mean it's a change org petition so it doesn't really matter but hey at least you feel like you're doing something.

I agree. That scene didn't land. Also, Jim didn't put anything on his hot dog. Just ate it dry. :twitch:

Watched Episode 2 of SNW. Really good.
