I just want there to be more than 18 Civs and hopefully the map sizes will support 32 or more Civs.

Maybe it would be an idea to have about 30 or 40 leader heads and you choose a leader head, name him, name your Civ, pick your traits and be off to the races. The AI can be set to randomly make it's choices. There could still be culture groups and such.

There could still be lists of names and Civs, if you want the game to randomly choose for you.

There could also be a list of UU's to choose from, etc...

An interesting Idea. Perhaps you could save certain combinations and add them to your civ list, so you wouldn't have to go through the whole deal of making your civ from scratch each time.

Yes, cool idea. Maybe we should created a mod: "Unlimited Civs!"
I guess the number of civs may still be limited by something hard-coded (hopefully not) but the idea of customizing civilizations is a good one.

Yes, there has to be some limit, even if the number of civs are dynamically allocated as new civs enter the game, but a limit of 32,000 or so (4 bytes) would prevent any complaints for sure.

I'm pretty sure it should be easy to mod in extra civilizations. At worst, you could replace an existing Civ with one you come up with. But my bet is, that some copy-and-paste action here and there followed by some modification of the double entries is enough to add a Civ.

I'm sure it will be, but most Civ players will never mod their game. A built in custom civ feature with some generic leaderheads and UUs would be something that many more people could enjoy straight out of the box.

True. If there appears to be a lot of demand for different Civs, then maybe the middle way is that someone comes up with an application to download freely where you can select some options for a new Civ and then it will change the appropriate game files based upon that input. But a walkthrough how to add a Civ might also be good enough for a lot of people; at least they don't have to figure out then how to do it themselves.

There was a bit of customization in Civ3. You got to rename the civilization and your leader, but the leaderhead, traits, and UU depended which Civ you picked and renamed. It would be a nice feature to be able to customize it completely, maybe even allow you to insert images for leaderheads?

That would probably be the best when you pick a Civ you get

Preset, Customize, Random Preset

when you Pick Customize you get all those options
for
Leader head
Leader Name
Traits
UU [no customize option, select from a list]
UU Name
Civ Name
City List (customize means your city names are "Civ Name" 1, etc. until you rename them)
Color?
