Hey all! We're coming up on one year since Civilization VII launched, which feels a little wild to put in writing!

It’s been a bit since our last update, but the team has been busy behind the scenes. Update 1.3.2 and the patch notes land tomorrow, the first round of the Firaxis Feature Workshop has wrapped (thank you to everyone who joined in!), and and we’re finally ready to start talking about some of the bigger ideas we’ve been exploring.

Here's some info from Ed on what’s coming soon and what we’ve been testing behind the scenes. Plus, we've got few anniversary surprises we're excited to share!

Read the full anniversary update.

Spoilers/quick update: Update 1.3.2 is coming tomorrow, and as a gift to our players for one year of Civ VII, Gilgamesh is returning as a free leader for all Civ VII players! Check out his game guide here (and keep an eye out for the First Look tomorrow).

Lastly, thank you for being part of Civ VII’s first year. The feedback, ideas, and insights you’ve shared - whether through the Workshop, wherever you talk Civ, or even just by playing-game - have guided how we approach both small tweaks and bigger systems. Looking forward to another year of many one-more-turns ahead.

We can finally talk about the Workshop stuff! Yay! Some of the changes are good (Triumphs especially), but some really don't work yet. (syncretism :-/).

I'm surprised they're going live this spring. I hope the devs will find the time to fine-tune them appropriately.

Gilgamesh is Himiko on roids, btw. He gets an additional Endeavour *per alliance*.

Interested by the isolated guitar track of Spain's theme that played during the update video. Could we get an upload of that? It sounded pretty cool :)

And Tourism is back for Culture Victory. :mischief:
It's called Tourism, but it seems to differ substantially from both the civ 5 and 6 ways of handling it.

@Lord Lakely I haven't participated in the FFW, but I'm curious that you criticize syncretisms. Reading through the features, I also thought that – while fun for trying crazy combos – it might be quite confusing to play against, and the opposite of what many people look for when they want one civ through all ages. They are probably not quite happy with a Rome that builds Mosques and trains Sherpas. Is this why you think the system is not quite at it or is there something else?

From what I understand, once a civilization moves past its Apex Age, it gets a standard (generic) Civic Tree that still includes a unique, civ-specific node. So the tree isn’t entirely generic as there remains some civilization‑specific contents in this age (in case of Roman Civs its Roman Renaissance). Will it be Egyptian/Mississippian/Greek Renaissance too, or something else with more unique features attributed to civ?

Yes, and they also get it if you play them before their Apex age.

Feeling very smug about my naming prediction here!

it was exceptionally poorly balanced in the workshop build.

You can see it in the screenshots, right? How a Roman Legion is weighed equally to a Forum, which is three bonuses in one...

There are other factors at play too that made it feel pointless. Civ Abilities were the same in all three Ages, so some Civs (Assyria, America, Prussia) were utterly UNHINGED out of their Era, while others didn't do anything meaningful out of their Era and were strictly worse if you didn't switch. In both cases the syncretic choice mattered little in making your Civ build and maintain its lead.

It's a work in progress but it's definitely the feature that needs the most work to get right (arguably too much work for spring).

I passed on my feedback as well as I could, so hopefully it'll be better once it is rebalanced a bit.

I finished none of my games, so I can't really comment on the new Victory Conditions. Triumphs are basically Milestones, but with different objectives. They run parallel to each other instead of linearly. I think it's a strict upgrade from the current system. It also needs more improvement, but I was encouraging in my feedback.

Nested tooltips are really good and there are a few small, unmentioned changes to the UI (specifically the Policy Screen) that definitely improve gameplay and the overal UX.

Syncretism looks horrible. It's the "I'm America, but with the bonuses of Rome" idea. The worst possible option.

I think it is really the only viable solution. Otherwise, how else do you solve the problem of a modern civ in the Antiquity Age with no Antiquity bonuses? So if you are going to offer an alternative to civ-switching, this is the solution that makes the most sense imo especially since it can already take advantage of the unique tradition trees and different civ bonuses already in the game during each Age.

Isn't that what would happen in actual alt-history scenarios, though? You can't obviously 1:1 model the sheer amount of nuance and possible changes to the timeline of real history in a video game, so bear in mind some abstraction.

My gut reaction to this is overwhelmingly positive, especially to the triumphs.

Syncretism seems like a fun alternate way to play — you’ll be able to have a unique civ-specific tree along with some attributes from an age-appropriate civ. I think that’s an appropriate compromise and they’ll no doubt adjust it as we get closer to release. I feel like the alternative is redesigning every civ from scratch which is far from ideal. Having the game built around ages necessitates this.

Overall, I love what you know so far about the test of time update. The "one civ" and "syncretism" features look great. Triumphs look like an amazing idea, exactly what I wanted and they will add so much more replayability compared to legacy paths. I am curious to learn more about the new victories. From the screenshot, it looks like victories will be more like a score system, where you get points for military, science, culture and economic stuff and whoever has the most points at the end of the Modern Age wins. Is that right?
