First things first: Sorry DOM, I just had to use this title :D

Anyway, down to business:

In my chieftain games, I ALWAYS make sure I build a barracks before I build a defencive unti (Except for my first 1 or 2 cites, where I build a warrion straight up) And checking through one of my games I was playing, I noticed that nearly all of my units (mech infs) weren't veteran (New and lod cities alike) now does anyone know of units losing their veteran status due to something? A long time fortified?? Anything???

it's because you probably ugraded them with Leonardo's Workshop, right? When you do that, they become regular again

But you can't upgrade to Mech Infantry with Leo's as it is obsolete by then.
The reason that they are not vets is because you don't have any more barracks. You obviously haven't noticed the announcements that come with both Gunpowder and Mobile Warfare that goes something like: "The development of G/MW has rendered existing barracks obsolete. All barracks sold for ____ gold." [I think you get 60 gold or so for each one]. This just takes away the barracks you have built up to that stage and you will have to build new ones if you want vet units from here on it.

It got you to read it, didn't it. ;)

duke o' york covered what I think the answer is. Your barracks become obsolete twice during the game at Gunpowder and Automobile(?) (I don't really build them so this is from unused parts of my memory). When they first become obsolete, and you rebuild them, the maintinance costs go up to $2 per turn, the next time they need to be rebuilt, they are $3 per turn.

I upped Leo's to be obsolete at Superconductor, so it upgrades my riflemen and cavalry to Mechs and Armour ;)

They were built after I had replaced my barracks

Come on, I have been playing since Civ 1, surely I would have noticed it by now...

Actually in your first post you said that you were playing at cheiftain level and to anyone who has not read your posts, then it looks like you are a beginner.
