Am I the only one that can't stand commercials by companies that advertise to us saying things like "we do it because we care about you."

    I don't get it.

I know they are in business to make money, they aren't in business to lose money. Making money is not a bad thing.

What is the deal with this? Does anyone really believe this kind of nonsense?

well, you know the "magic" of publicity.
I agree, with you, they dont care about you, the only thing they care is to fill their pockets with your money.
I also find it annoying and sometimes disgusting

See, you're on the other extreme, that these people want to rape me of all my money and don't care whether I'm satisfied or not, which is not true. Customer satisfaction is important to any good business.

The more commercials I see, the more I am convinced that they are not aimed at me.

No, you are not the only realistic human being on the planet.

    Happy now?

Only superficially. They don't have to care about you.

If she is young and pretty, it means that I can happily delude myself.

Otherwise, I find such statements as nauseating as RMS.

They do care about you: you give them money. Now, they only care about you if you are giving them money, or are considering it. Otherwise the statement does not apply.

The commercials are aimed at women.

Women like to be told they are being cared for.

The marketing guys took a page right out of the socialist politician's handbook.

From big companies it's the love of robots. A small percentage of companies genuinely care about the product though, so indirectly care about the consumer.

I, for example, care immensely about the ergonomic and aesthetic worth of my products and use devious ways to match those to the customer. I must care more for quality than the customer, so can't merely respond to a market but must have a real driving affection for the product. That's the only way to surpass marginal. I suppose if I were designing tampons or teaching ten-year-olds this empathy for the consumer would be more obvious. Yet even those faceless auto mechanics behind the shop do care, some of them far more than they need to.

According to U.S. politics, women are divided between 'soccer moms' and 'security moms'. Men are called 'office park dads'.

I don't know. I didn't used to think commercials worked, but I've changed my mind.

The Jimi Hendrix commercial during the superbowl pushed me over the edge and I ordered a new $1000 guitar the next day. I couldn't even wait until I got off work to buy one at a music store. The were trying to get $.50 out of me for a can of Pepsi and instead I drank a coke and bought a something 2000x more expensive.

I have really grown to despise commercials with kids selling something. And it is usually a product aimed at adults, like investment banking or buying a new special ed bus...errr...SUV.

For some straaaange reason, I don't buy things because a small child acting stupidly cute tries to sell it to me.

Commercials are what mute buttons were created for.

Some commercials do work on me - I got into Civ thanks to an ad for CivII back in, what, '96? - but a high percentage only provoke hostility on my part. My typical reaction to ads of the "We Care" variety is "Well, I don't care about you. Go and die!". Not terribly nice of me, I know, but I figure ad-makers are paid to please me, not the other way around.

Plenty of businesses do indeed care about you, although usually not the large ones.

If they cared about me, they wouldn't provoke me by saying it!

I agree, I know what they want, so it's better to play it straight and even better give me a good time while they give me good reasons to buy their stuff. Same goes for commercials where they try to convince me that buying this product will improve my life significantly when it's only a soap or refrigerator.

Still, many products today are so similar, no matter who produced it, that making a special (funny, caring...) commercial is better than getting better specs on the product.

Although this is not the best example, multiple and mixed motivations are the rule tather than the exception, for almost all human endevors.
