I just saw Amazon is selling a Civ5 guide to be released Sept 10. I didn't know that they still made these guides anymore.

Moderator Action: The release has been postponed, i've edited the thread title. The_J

A guide for Civilization? that seems so... pointless

Indeed. It would make for some fun reading for the week before the game debuted.

It would sort of take the place of the demo in a way.

The only problem being that these guides are usually outdated even before the game is released.

Yeah, I'll just have to hope that The Question collection keeps me occupied until Tuesday, at which time I'll have to hope Other M keeps me occupied until the 10th, when I'll have to hope the guide at least keeps me good company until the 21st. :crazyeye: Or I could get a life.

And if that didn't make me sound like an adbot with a harsh streak, nothing wii! I mean will!

I never buy official strategy guides, because fansites are always better, especially civfanatics. I'm tempted by this, just because it will be available before the game. I think I'll just hope it is in stock at Best Buy or Gamestop, and just check it out in the store without buying it. I guess it should be in retail stores on Sept 10, right?

UPDATE: Spotted at Gamestop - http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=78640
Price is $20 there, and oddly enough release date is listed as 9/14/10 for the guide. Includes a description that I didn't see on the Amazon product page.

"Maximize each Civilization's bonus abilities and units
Discover the path to Domination, Space Race, Diplomatic, and Cultural victories
Resource management tips improve your science, culture, and production
Follow efficient paths on the Technology Tree to unlock the best units, buildings, and World Wonders
Learn how to deal with City-States, new for Civilization V"

I'm tempted by this, but the BG Civ IV guide didn't get very good reviews. Although, the Civ V guide is almost 60 pages longer--whatever that's worth.

Shoot! I'm gonna be busy tomorow and gone on the weekend then busy again all day monday.

Seems a wee bit odd to ship the strategy guide almost 2 weeks before the game itself...although that's one way to get some sales...because I'm tempted to buy it. If it was released at the same time as the game I wouldn't even consider it.

B&N has it listed for the 10th too and there's one nearby. Hmmm. I wonder what time book stores usually have new arrivals on the shelf.

Amazing how so many sites get to preview the game, so many events show the game, Brady Games has enough access to write and release a guide book well before release, there are reviews already done, and yet...no demo before release. Seems everybody but the players already got to play the demo!

I'm a big fan of a well layed out and informative SG - I have a nice collection of half a dozen or so (many are hard bound if they have that option and I liked them and the game they represented) and getting Civ V to add to that collection is a no brainer, assuming it's a nice layout and has some great info.

I just ordered the guide from Amazon (with Two Day Shipping) and the confirmation said that the Estimated Delivery Date is Sept 14th. It also mentioned that it will arrive in 1 shipment. I certainly hope so. If I were to receive it in multiple shipments, I would be a bit upset. :D

What about receiving it in 250 shipments?

Normally these guides are pretty worthless due to being out of date very quickly and also (usually) being inferior to the guides and discussions online, but the fact that it comes out a week earlier makes it a little more appealing for those of us who need to get our CiV fix asap. It's tempting . . . would certainly help me in planning out my approach for my first game :)
