This irritates me no end! Whenever I play, the Americans are almost constantly a vassal state. :( This spoils the end game somewhat! Is there something that can be done to give the americans some backbone???

Give them Einstein.

America's train of thought:

*spawns*
"Gee, powerful Europeans all around me. Better keep a low profile until I get these other cities founded."
"Ooh, free cit- oh crap, England declared war on me! And they have huge stacks of Redcoats back in Britain!"
"I have hardly any army and even less production... I need an ally."
"Hey Bismarck, interested in a vassal?"

Personally, I'd like it is peaceful vassalization were a bit less likely and capitulation a bit more likely.

AI England should not declare war on America anyway - it never bothers to carry the troops there, so that declaration is pointless.

Maybe they will do something with plague disabled, I dunno...

I think that the capitulation treshold is good as it is.

Peaceful capitulation mostly happens in history when a small part of a nation splits from the "mother nation", an example could have been America if England would accept the liberation of cities to the Americans :).

Einstein > nukes > the USA nuke Japan > the USA start their rampaging imperialistic foreign politics. So at the end of the equation, Einstein gives some backbone to the USA ;)

Voluntary vassalization threshold should be lowered, if anything. Mongolian Khanate of Brazil (Portugal without Lissabon) doesn't seem right, when the Mongolians never been anywhere near Portugal or Brazil. Them capitulating to Spain, who captured Lisboa, makes more sense.

Of course, I can just change the iVassalPowerModifiers.
