But speaking of submarine movies, and Hollywood giving the Brits short-shrift in WWII, I'm surprised nobody's mentioned the film U-571. It portrays an American crew capturing Enigma material from a U-boat, something which (in reality) was done almost entirely by British sailors.
This capture was directly responsible for allowing Bletchley to break the U-Boat Enigma code which had eluded them for the previous nine months, at tremendous cost to Allied shipping.
A few seconds after the material was handed over to Brown, the submarine sank with Fasson and Grazier still on board.
Oh. Here we go again. I've already mentioned this spurious film in post 14. The Enigma machine that you are referring to was the 3rd. one captured by the Allies. The first one was seized by the Polish Resistance on a raid of the Gestapo HQ in Warsaw and smuggled into Britain where its code was broken by the intelligence team at Bletchley Park. There was no need to capture another except for additional verification. The code was already broken long before the 3rd. machine was captured. So no need at all for the Royal Navy in this regard. And absolutely no role for the Americans either. The film is romantic fabrication and an American wet dream IMO.
