I was at work this evening when suddenly it hit me on how to possibly use helicopters and my Amphib Carriers like my Tarawa.

Make it a transport and not an aircraft carrier.

Make helicopters just another form of land unit.. foot infantry. That is essentially how they are used today. To transport infantry to and from the battlefield. Just give them 1 movement, all terrain as roads. How to use gunships? Just more powerful in the attack and give them a bombard ability, all terrain as roads. This does away with the transport helicopter. If you really want a transport... use an aircraft like a C-5 or C-17.

If you have helicopters as foot infantry, then you can have your Tarawa transport only foot infantry, like marines, and their helicopters. I don't suggest fooling around with Harriers. Keep them as fighters and just give the Tarawa a good AA defence.

wouldn't there be the problem that footunits(helicopters) wont move over watertiles? THis might be fixed by giving them the marine abilitybut wouldn't this still cost them one point of movement even with all terrain as roads? Perhaps an other way would be to make the Tarrawa class a foot and aircraft transpoter (but activate transport footunits only) so it's possible to airdrop Helis at the coast....
Hmm all in all not the worst idea out there....

Sounds good, but wouldn't you then be able to load helicopters into the transport aircraft?
sure, havent you ever seen a blackhawk or apache being loaded onto a C-5? You can't think of these things as individual units, rather as representations of a military group. Rarely do you see tanks alone, they always operate with infantry backup be it mechanized or dismounted. But that would be too cluttered at civ scale. So if you load a helicopter onto a transport aircraft, that just means you are about to transfer an airmobile infantry group to another location.

Makes sense and you are right airmobile brigades contain more foot tropps than helicopters plus it makes good use of the C-120 that recently popped up.
