I usually don’t research these but with a big tech lead in a recent game I thought I would.

Marines we all know about these but have you ever built a marine army? I did & it worked, attacking from sea tiles just like any other army.

Paratroops not sure I’d ever fooled around with these. Yes, you can build an army but no you can’t drop it from the sky, which is a great pity. You could fly a great leader in with them by helicopter & then load them, I guess.

Helicopters these are surprisingly useful. They can fly recon, lighting up enemy areas, or conduct airdrops. Up to 3 units can be loaded but not mechanised ones. I think the airlifted units are out of moves on landing, also a pity. I haven’t tried flying in cavalry. Maybe they still have moves, I dunno.

Best use, so far, seems to be drop things in the enemy rear & start causing trouble. I prefer mountain landing sites. My impression is the AI really doesn’t like having things going on behind the lines & tends to react bigly. In the aforesaid game it abandoned a well-fortified isthmus to head back to the landing zones, allowing my ordinary ground units to advance. Rescue is something I haven’t investigated. Can helicopters land in hostile territory & fly the guys out? Can you build an airstrip so the paratroopers can fly home?

Thoughts welcome. Pretty sure I’ll research advanced flight routinely from now on, so long as not too far behind.

Sadly Civ2 doesn't allow for 'air transport' units so no one can pick them up heh. Capturing or making an airbase should allow an airlift out though. I remember in a recent game where I was similarly bullying AI players who were building spaceships or picking on another small Civ I liked.. I'd drop in some paratroopers, do the job, and then use the enemies rail system to get them to the nearest coast where I'd have a ship waiting. Easier with spies as I'd just have to drop them off on the coast and they'd auto 'teleport' back after completing their missions heh.

I rarely use marines too since they struggle to break through modern defenses and once a coastal city is empty then every unit on the ship becomes a marine anyway hehe.

I don't normally use Helecopters either as once again I find them ineffective in the late game (not strong enough to break though modern defenses and the world is already explored) although I've started playtesting my Sid Meier's Alpha Centuari scenario for Civ2 and have been using copters in that as I've made them a very useful early game explorer (although they kill good huts sadly so they're no good for that).

walletta, can it be, that here you have mixed up Civ 3 with Civ 2 ? Armies and helicopters, transporting land units that can be droped down, are part of Civ 3 and not of Civ 2.

I’ve used helicopters for recon and airdrops too, and they’re super handy for causing chaos behind enemy lines. I’ve noticed the AI tends to panic and pull back when you start messing with their rear defenses.

Marines are tremendously useful. :yup:

If I catch anyone else building a spaceship, I send in the spies to commit sabotage. Nobody gets to build spaceships but me! :nono:
