I always runs the science slider at 100% or 0% until middle age. Because anything in between would cost you 1 gpt per turn. Also, having a big cash reserve can help if AI want to trade with you or to negate random event. The downside is sometimes I misestimate and should have reserached currency 2 turns early.
The rounding issues that initially made this viable were fixed by now. And even if you save 1 gpt per turn... Over a course of a game i gives you what ? 400 Gold ? It's a cheap tech or 2 unit upgrades... Not really worth the increased MM tedium by my book...
I wouldn't call it annoying habit tho. If you prefer it this way, keep doing it.
I often do the same, for different reasons. Say I've just discovered Writing and am paying significant maintenance from REXing... I will run 100% gold until libraries are in place in my major cities.
On the other hand, I will research at 100% emptying my treasurey whenever a tech is in reach that gives me a benefits just from knowing it (Currency, Corporation, Printing Press etc).
The 100%/0% cycle can lead to significant diferences if applied to certain jump points in the game , like when libraries/universities/observatories appear in game. Getting to 0% while building the universities and run 100% after they are done can lead to a significant diference in the total beaker output, far bigger than the 400 gold than he puts in his example.
But besides those points , I agree... it is virtually useless besides some savings because of the effect of more civs having the tech ( making it cheaper ). Not a bad habit, but not for every stomach....
Yea, occasional deficit research on some breaking points can be profitable, but it is not the same as beeing "Constantly switching between 100 and 0". Also deficit research becomes even more profitable (in terms of techs gained) if i aquire the gold to found it from some other source, whithout to drom my slider to 0%.
min-max research for me too. I may run at moderate percentages for the last 1 or 2 turns for a tech. Sometimes more, when I miscalculate, but all or nothing is what I aim for.
Flexibility is the main reason.
Never will switch a tech in the middle of research, but still want to be able to adjust to the situation and also have the occasional tech monopoly. Short 100% bursts are the best way to ensure to be the first to discover a particular tech and the fastest way to research a specific counter to a threat.
You also get the option at the end of every cycle, to spend the accumulated gold on unit upgrades instead of new research, when threatened.
Not really. Sometimes getting bullied for gold can even be an advantage, as giving in ensures the AI cannot attack you for 10 turns. It also makes the AI more pleased, which can make a difference.
It fits my overal strategy of getting the world divided into blocs: enemies I don't mind pissing off and enemies of my enemies, who I suck up to until my empire is big enough.
Anyway, I'd rather give away some gold than a monopoly tech.
I never get bullied for 10g. Usually for something like 100 gold, no matter how much gold I got. Strange you get these numbers. I play emperor. Maybe you play higher levels.
Yeah I'd too jump on geting +relations and 10 turns garanteed, for a mere 10 gold, but I never seen it happen before.
I've got bullied in 10 g in emperor once or twice, but normally they ask for 50 g and above. Some AI love to bully, you know ( hint: Portuguese leader )
I really hate how it's based on a percentage so that if you have a thriving econ they ask for even more. This just makes me less willing to stockpile cash.
Having a large gold stockpile also helps with some of the random events in BTS - there are lots of events where you need a pile of money to enable some of the more powerful effects.
The only time I find the 0% then 100% worthwhile is while buildings science multipliers, because that will definitely make the total commerce usage more efficient...
I'm getting better about having a lower cashflow for much of the game while I REX, but with the science slider I tend to have it on full for a while at the beginning and gradually turn it down when I need more money. If I have over +100 GPT I'll turn on the culture slider so my borders begin to expand particularly while warring in the later stages of the game. It just depends but I wouldn't run at 0% Science unless I really needed cash that badly. Given that you can have 10 points on the scale, why settle for just two?
