Am starting a new series (on Youtube) where people can send in their games to me and I will give my thoughts on how I would proceed with the game and what I think they have done right/wrong up until that point.

Anyone interested feel free to send me your save files either by replying to this thread or by sending me a message by clicking on my name and then 'start a conversation'.

Uploading your save file by attaching it to your message:
    Saves located at: Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 5\ModdedSaves\single

Starting save would also be useful if you have that. If it is your most recent game there should be an initial save in the 'auto' folder in the same location.

    Useful information:

    1. Which Patch are you using?
    2. Using any other Mods which affect savegame compatibility?
    3. Game settings: Difficulty, Game Speed, Map type etc.
    4. Feel free to leave as long or short description of your game as you want.
    5. Is there anything specific you would like me to talk about?
    6. Would you like to be anonymous? (I will use your forum name otherwise)

Let's start this, because I have a well-documented game at my disposal.

Culture's in the sinkhole, happens. I've kinda been neglectful on culture on purpose to evaluate how the Netherlands' UA can fare. I'm usually extremely focused on culture and was able to win, so this time I made myself science and diplomatic focused.

    1. April 12, I'll send you install on PM. I've played it with a modification of that gave a boost to AI warmongering but it should let you play. If not I send you the file I changed.
    2. This one. It changes nothing, only adding new religion icons. I also use Aqinu's UI mod but it should let you play without it.
    3. Deity, standard speed, standard size, continents, 8 civs, 16 city-states, no events.
    4. In the photojournal.
    5. How to deal with such a damn snowballer like Ahmad. He has all the world's wonders and I think peaceful tradition against him is a nightmare. Also I would like you to talk in detail how you judge my decisions that game when it comes to religion, to policies, to wonders, late cities setting and general development.
    6. Of course not.

I gave Venice a whirl (on immortal, large, normal speed) I think it was communitas map (latest beta patch). I think im just using your hotkeys mod and the MoreMusic mod which is here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=958046730

Synopsis: I fell too far behind this game and lost an important city state just after I purchased it, which was huge and so I lost. It was tough to keep cargo ships alive since AI would declare war on me willy nilly.. thanks to the underhanded Assyrians constantly bribing them me thinks. Not sure whereabouts this save is in the scheme of things but 1000AD is nice round number. Here is same game a little bit later shortly before I gave up (for context).

Cool thanks man! should be able to do a vid on it in a day or two. Pretty sad location there with not the best land and Assyria so close...

You got an initial save by any chance? It would be in autosaves as AutoSave_Initial or OldAutoSave_Initial. And what was the city state which you purchased and then lost?

Also got any feedback on the Hotkey Mod? Like is it all working or are there any keys you find weird?

Earliest I have is BC 950.
The city state was wellington, at the top right near polynesia. I think I was wanting to monopoly whales and thought it would be less likely to be conquered since it was out of the way (stupidly).
Your hotkey mod seems fine/good, except the menu keys, like the old f1, f2, f3 etc, i might change those back. Generally I haven't been using hotkeys all that much though to be honest, i'll probably use it more over time as I get used to it.

Alright I believe my vid will be up in an hour or two but I'll post the main points here:
So I know it kinda sucks when games start going wrong but it still seemed quite winnable from the last save you sent me. You have pretty good wonders and it seemed like you did a good job of not greeding for more unnecessary ones so your capital is very well built up and you have lots of money as well. Leaning Tower is also still available and you are about to get your 10th policy so if you wanted to try and win this one I would recommend building that. Great Prophet can get you to Reformation where I would recommend Glory of God. Also since you have all buildings in capital you can start building/buying some boats to protect your cargo ships and you should make sure you are always working all possible Culture specialists from now so you can catch up on policies. Didn't mention this in the vid but I think your great work slots were not correctly done when I looked as well. Oxford university or any Wonder's theming bonus is always better than the standard bonus from amphitheatre/museum.

In terms of mistakes I think you made: It's almost always worth working all possible culture specialist slots when playing tradition. Spies can catch you up on science but there is no catch up for culture.

Religion probably should have been quite different. The founder belief you chose is just generally worse that the others imo. I'm guessing you were just going for all money beliefs to synergise with the Rialto District but I think that beliefs which gave Culture/science/food probably would be more useful here as they are generally better than gold and you only get 1 extra delegate per 100 gpt which isn't a great conversion rate. Not a lot of amazing beliefs as Venice i suppose but mastery and ascetism might have been a good combo.

I think the biggest mistake you made was strategically though, I'm pretty sure there is no way you could ever get through this game without being at war with Assyria at some point so probably it would have been best to try and weaken them early on by stealing settler/workers. Dur-Sharrukin city definitely should have been where you put your first or second Colonia as it gives a good defensive location for you along with Eraclea that you founded. Also gotta remember anywhere you don't put a city an AI eventually will. When playing Venice I think it's pretty important to use your Colonia to protect your capital first before going for resources/monopolies etc.

Will just end with some other stuff about playing Venice:
    - Pyramids and Imperium policy give you a Merchant of Venice instead of settler.
    - Instant yields in puppet cities give full amounts. For example Cooperation belief is probably the best one as Venice (though AIs often take it early)

Not saying you should have done these things but they are good to know for future if you didn't already.

Hope this helps man, thanks again for sending this in was definitely an interesting one to analyse:)

Venice is cool and interesting but also really hard mode. I think you need to have a powerful late game plan because they really fall off the deeper inot the game you get.

Hmm yea Science is probably going to be the main issue later. And Diplo and cultural Victory are quite hard generally even with some bonuses. I'm actually wondering if Domination Victory is the best way to go.

Yeah that is what I did when I tried Venice. Puppets are just awful and get worse and worse the deeper into the game you get. It costs a huge amount of money to force them to build the right buildings and when you don't they will make useless ones. Even with the policy that reduces puppet modifier you have loads of unproductive cities. (I think puppets makes GGP now which is an improvement at least?)

So the solution I went with was to end the game more quickly, conquer and vassalize the threats. Bonuses from vassals are slightly better as you only have one city so no research penalty. You do need to be careful with your units as you only have one production city but the military UB is pretty great.

I went stonehenge into 2 faith per wonder pantheon as you will build some wonders early as you don't have much else to build as Venice. Tradition into authority, attacking with crossbows as a timing probably. Seemed like it worked fairly well as a basic plan.

2 tradition into authority? If you have religion seems like Zealotry would be super useful for getting the units as well.

Yes they do make GPPs, also do you know if puppet cities pay building maintenance? That seems like it could be quite crippling if you conquered a lot.

I went full tradition so the authority was slower but you will have to fill out something later on anyway.

Puppets being awful just makes it even more important to makes vassals with the minimum amount of city taking. You do have loads of trade routes, and only so many internal routes do anything.

@jeterb98 Okay man just put the vid up

Think people gave some good advice on the other thread about what the next military move should be but I just wanted to give some points on other things you could do in this game or others so that you can keep up without conquering so that you aren't forced to rush into attacks just to not fall behind.

    @Milae

Enjoyed the video, thanks for putting it up. Agreed with pretty much everything you said and picked up a few tips along the way :)

The only thing I strongly disagree with was the suggestion (which seemed like an afterthought) of choosing production focus if you don't lock tiles - in my experience that seems to make the governor do an even worse job of picking them (although, to be fair, I haven't tried it in any very recent versions). Typically, he may pick an unimproved plains tile, just because it has one production, over way better tiles but with no production.

You should probably always do production focus because whenever your city grows you don't get food from the new title but you do get production. (you do then need to remember to lock a new title every time a city grows so it is a bit fiddly)

It's not like that in VP. Production actually triggers first now, then food, then other yields so you will get gold, science, culture, faith but not production and food from new citizens. So for max efficiency usually do gold focus.

Won't your city work all merchants then? Unless you manually control specialists, of course.
