So far I have heard alot of whinning about Ancient combat unfairness. I am no expert, but I have taken ALOT of different things into consideration about ancient combat. Some factors you need to understand before you engage in combat prior to gun powder (and even after).
If you wonder why defending warriors kill cavalry, and archers die attacking warriors, here may be a few reasons.
The following will affect Defense of units:
- Unit is fortified
- Unit is in a walled city
- Unit is on Defendable terrain (mountains)
- Unit is fortified on mountainous terrain.
- Unit is in a city with 7+ pop
- Unit is fortified in a city with 7+ pop
- Unit is in fortress on defendable terrain
- Unit is fortified in a fortress on defendable terrain.
I am pretty sure I read in the manual that terrain affects combat. If I'm wrong slap me.
So if the above is true, dragging battles across mountains can be devastating for the agressor. Any little thing in ancient age can make a difference. If a warrior goes from a D1 to a D2 because of mountain, then archers are going to bounce off of him and its going to seem unfair, when in fact its just someones inability to calculate ALL force modifiers.
