...is there an optimum number of cities to build?

I've been trying to build as many cities as I can as fast as I can in an effort control as much area as I can. Is this a wrong approach?

Thanks!

there is a limit to the amount of cities you can build it depends on what civ you are also if you build say 100 cities in most of those you will have very high corruption rates so try and build them realitively near the capital move the palace or build an FP somewhere the otherside of your empire.

p.s. you can only build a certain number of cities but there is no limit to the amount you can control.

There isn't an optimal number of cities to build. The game does have an "optimal number of cities" depending on map size. Once you get twice this number the furthest cities will have 95% corruption- regardless what improvements are made to try and counteract it. Controlling the territory that the they do is still important. Just don't expect them to produce anything. The number can be seen (and changed) via the editor. A good thread on corruption:
