More riots in Copenhagen!

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Six youths were arrested in Copenhagen for setting cars and dumpsters ablaze and throwing stones at police in a fifth night of riots in a predominantly immigrant area of the Danish capital, police said Friday.

"We've had six arrests so far. They've been charged with throwing stones at police and setting fires to cars and waste containers," Chief Inspector Henrik Olesen of the Copenhagen police told AFP.

At least 11 cars were torched in various neighbourhoods of Copenhagen, and 10 others in the nearby town of Kokkedal.

On Thursday, 17 youths were arrested for rioting the previous night.

"We don't know why they're rioting. I think it's because they're bored. Some people say it's because of the cartoons but that's not my opinion," Olesen said.

He was referring to the reprinting of a controversial cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed in 17 Danish newspapers on Wednesday.

The drawing, published in Denmark for the first time in 2005, sparked several months of angry protests in the Muslim world in 2006. It depicted the prophet with a turban resembling a bomb with a lit fuse.

Protests have flared up again in several Muslim countries including Kuwait and Pakistan following the reprinting. The Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas also condemned the publication.

The caricature was reprinted this week after Danish police uncovered a plot to kill the cartoonist.

Three people were arrested for planning the murder, including two Tunisians who have lived in Denmark for more than seven years and whom Denmark has decided to expel without a trial.

That decision has been heavily criticised by human rights associations and some politicians and legal experts in Denmark.

Smooth. I think it was pretty rude to post these cartoons in the first place, since they make disparaging comments about some dude they rever as the messenger of God (okay, extremely generalized. you know what I mean). But Muslim immigrants to the Western World should accept that freedom of religion and freedom of expression also go the other way; others are allowed to criticize your views, religious or political or moral, and you can't do much about it, excluding slander and libel. Anyways, these protests and riots are just ********- except in France. Then its funny.

Why the hate? Is this a preemptive troll? Not sure what great thought you're trying to add here.

Well, dont you think 'hate' kind of a strong word? Thats not really hate, but irony in action.

Point being, I find these type of stories rather ironic in the face of the various EU-ites trying to always tell us how their countries are more advanced/happier/stable because of their social programs.

But as the story indicates and to coin an old phrase....theres something rotten in Denmark.

You can not take one news and extend it to say the entire country is rotten.

Or else, do you mind discussing the latest US college shooting?

Finally! What took you so long, Danes?

Anyway, people just rioting for no apparent reason? Sounds like I lost my bet. I was sure it was going to be Kristiania related.

touché, with the same kind of arguments you could claim that it's still better if the youths are torching cars than if they're killing each other in school.

neither comparison/generalisation is fair. or tasteful.

Danish police could use some live ammo training. And supressing the riots in the same time.

Sure, but just because a few people on a random internet forum like to snub Americans from time to time, that doesn't mean that when we, in turn, have a random example in some problem in one of their countries that we should rub there faces in it in some kind of "nah nah nah I told you so."

Its like the opposite of when there some kind of mass shooting and they go "OMG WTH GUNZZ". These are fairly isolated incidents in populations that number in the 100s of millions. There are forces at work here far beyond the intellectual complexity that 95% of the posters here can muster.

I guess that's a complicated way of saying "meh"? ;)
