What do you think about Japanese animation, or Anime? You know, it's that kind of animation where characters have big eyes and heads and small mouths and noses; but sometimes they don't have any noses at all.

Some Anime products include:

Dragon Ballz
Digimon
Sailor Moon
Hentai(Anime pornography)

I'm asking this question because Anime is actually quite controversial. Some people think it just sucks, some people think it causes siezures, and some people even think it is evil because there are sickos who are obsessed with Anime porn and everything that has to do with Anime.

I don't have a problem with it as much as the culture and people who get excited about it annoy me.

They're kooky cartoons; I just don't get why people get so excited about them.

I'm a fanatic of anime. I got a vast anime collection on VCDs. I also got lots of manga (in Chinese translated format).

Actually, in the newer anime releases, the characterization is more human-like i.e. no more overly large eyes etc.

And I forgot to mention that all of the Anime fans I know are nerdier than Civ fans. They also tend to be very out of shape, and sometimes they're gothic.....................

Yes but the theme, humor and plot are pretty American and expectant. OTOH, the plots and stories for some of the Jap anime series can be downright astounding and original. Think Final Fantasy here.

E.g. the Legend of Galatic Heroes was basically a huge slugfest between 2 mighty human space empires - the Reich and the United Free Planets, involving tens of thousands of battleships and tens of millions of troops and revolves around 2 Napoleonic-like figures arising in each empire. A lot of plotting, politics, battles etc. The story is still astounding even though the anime itself is at least a decade old. Like when the time the UFP launched the Expedition of Ten Thousand Light Years involving 20 million troops to invade the Reich and got trashed.

Yeah, but that is just because American animation tends to be more comical and less serious, and there are also some horrible Anime exceptions: Pokemon, Digimon, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ballz, Hentai.

Those are oldish and kid cartoon. Real Jap anime is more adult-theme. There're a vast amt of anime series out there and you're only picking on these (excepting hentai) which are really meant for kids. I have never watch them.

Some anime can be quite violent and disturbing. Believe me, I have seen them.

There's some pretty disturbing stuff in American animation too. Ever seen a kid with a scrotum and testies growing off his chin? Hows' aboot a talking piece of poo with a Santa Clause hat kissing a kid on the cheek? Hows' aboot Ms. Cartman peeing in cup and making Mr. Makey drink it?

Face it, South Park is the best TELEVISION SHOW in the history of the universe!

I don't know but your examples are more comic than disturbing. OK, disturbing in a comic sort of way.

My brand of disturbing is when you have kids being genetically manipulated and then they grow up into legless, armless entities in huge vats, and used to produce genetic-enhancement pills, sort of like farming. And they're conscious and still self-aware the wholetime.....

Or like when 99.99% of the earth's human population had died in an outbreak of monsters who turned the mass of human bodies into huge-sized 'mothballs' as food storage...... And you have these bodies and faces, frozen in horror; visible on the surfaces of the 'balls'.

Not something you'll want your kids to watch. Whole concept is disturbing.

Face it, South Park is the best TELEVISION SHOW in the history of the universe!

No argument there but then, I don't watch TV much.

I don't like it from what I have seen, and also think that South Park is puerile obscene nonsense.
For moi, no cartoon can approach the glorious perfection and magnificent epiphany that was "The Mysterious Cities of Gold".
Sigh... It has been too long since I saw that, but I have sworn to buy it by any means necessary.
