The Hall of Fame Team would like to welcome new players, and welcome back old vets, to the Eighteenth running of the Civfanatics Civ IV Hall of Fame Challenge Series.

HOF Challenge XVII was a successful and competitive installment of the series, won by ChrisFromLux. HOF Challenge XVIII is a collection of 10 games with a time limit of 6 months to complete them (from 25th January to 24th July 2017).

The winner will be the person who finishes the most games and collects the most points along the way (10 for 1st in each individual game, down to 1 for 10th). Progress results for all games can be found at http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/challenge.php. There are individual threads for each game in the Challenge Series forum so head on over and check it out.

This challenge has a theme - "Fall of the Inca". The Inca are widely recognised as the most powerful nation you can play in Civ IV, especially at the higher levels where the anti-archery bonus for the Quecha UU means you have a powerful attacking force from Turn 0. Their UB, the Terrace, is based on a building you will normally construct in every city (Granary) and acts as a mini-creative trait. Their actual traits are 2 of the strongest in the game - Financial and Industrious. Finally their starting techs of Agriculture and Mysticism are very flexible - your workers have something to do immediately and you can compete in the race for early religions if you so desire. The Incans are so strong that their games do not count towards Elite Quatrromaster status and they are not normally chosen for Gauntlets.

Normally Challenge games have quite restrictive options and difficult opponents, this time the real challenge is the fact that each of these games is aimed at one of the oldest standing records in the HOF. We have targeted 10 of the oldest #1 slots held by the Incans, dates perceived as very difficult to beat playing as another Civ. Not only will you compete against the other players in this Challenge but also the spectre of these records which have stood the test of time.

As well as the Challenge page itself and the forum mentioned above we have created a special page on the site where you can explore some of the facts and figures behind the Incans and their dominance - this can be found at http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/fall_inca.php.

For those unfamiliar with the CFC Hall of Fame (HOF), we encourage you to try the challenge as a way of introducing yourself to the HOF. The Challenge series is just one feature of the HOF. A Gauntlet series of games is run monthly. In addition you can simply submit any of your games to the HOF. All valid games are recorded to a database and ranked under various categories. The HOF enables you to compare your progress against other HOFers over all time or simply track your own progress. In other words, the HOF is as competitive as you want it to be.

In addition, the CFC HOF offers two ongoing challenge/achievements called the Quatromasters and Elite Quatromasters which can be found here. All valid game submissions to the HOF apply toward your progress of these long-term achievements. Are you up for the challenge? :)

All of the games need to be played using version 3 of the BUFFY mod (BUFFY-3.19.003 or BUFFY-3.19.004b), found here. Cultural games must be played using BUFFY-3.19.004b). Standard Hall of Fame Rules apply to all games.

Note that we had to some re-balancing after the initial announcement based on feedback - please check carefully the settings of your games before playing.

As if the Incans weren't over-powered enough, they also have a mini Aggressive Trait, since the Quechua starts with Combat I, similar to the best benefit that an Aggressive Leader would get, i.e. a free Combat I Promotion, meaning that the first earned Promotion can already be Shock (Anti-Melee) or Cover (Anti-Archery). The Aggressive Trait's cheap Barracks is about as good as a cheap Theatre for the Creative Trait--a minor bonus on an already-cheap Building, while it is the free Combat I Promotion that is the best part of the Aggressive Trait, in my opinion, and the Incans got that best part. The Incans used to be Financial and Aggressive, so a Developer who liked playing an over-powered Civ probably decided to keep that Promotion on the Quechuas.

The fact that the Warrior is a Unique Unit in and of itself also makes this fact unfairly strong. For one, you can connect Copper or Iron and still build cheap Warrior-replacement Military Police Units alongside of Swordsmen, Axemen, and Spearmen, due to the Unique Unit not immediately obsoleting, which is a feat that other Civs can only replicate if they avoid learning Hunting (except with being unable to build Spearmen). You can even build Quechuas alongside of Pikemen if you avoid Civil Service.

I have seen a Huayna AI effectively spam Quechuas, finish off the techs for Macemen, then get an instant army of free-Combat-I Macemen.

I highly support any attempt to rid the tables of #1 entries played as Huayna, so I'm going have to make the time to participate in some of these games. Thanks for hosting the competition and may collaboration lead to some record-breaking submissions! :goodjob:
