Annoying so-called "Messenger Service" message. Virus?

I'm getting this window more often every day. Got any idea where it's from? And more importantly: How do I get rid of it?? It looks very much like a virus.

You probably have some sort of Spyware on your system. Try downloading either Adaware or spybot search and destroy.

Messenger Service is another annoying piece of MS crap that is auto-installed on your system. It is *supposed* to be for LAN communication, but like everything else MS, is full of security holes. Check this thread for more info on it, and how to disable it.

yes, it is a pain - it's supposed to be useful for networks, but in every job I've had that has a computer network (even at my old school and then college) no network ever used this service. So thanks MS, for enabling more spam.

The messenger service alert is indeed spam and not a virus.

According to annoyances.org it is a problem for both XP and Windows 2000.

BTW, that site is a good one for information about this and similar problems.
