Ok I've searched through all the posts I could find about this but nothing helps.

It's the "blocky, unreadable" rendered font problem. This first happened to me last year when I installed Dreamweaver. But it happened today after having installed several programs over the last couple of days. And uninstalling/reinstalling all of civ3 doesn't fix it.

Could someone be so kind to explain why this happens? I can understand a program might overwrite installed fonts, but which ones does civ3 use? Also why does civ have its own 'lsans.ttf' file? If it's using that file then how do overwritten system fonts corrupt civ? I've done the "delete lsans.fot" thing but that doesn't help either.

I've uninstalled all the apps that have been installed since I last played civ a couple of days ago but the problem persists. It seems I will have to do a clean xp install just so I can play civ again. But if somebody could explain how/why this happens, it should be fixable by overwriting the files involved.

Any ideas?

It's the same problem as shown in this thread in kris55's pic.

Hey all, I finally got it fixed.

This post helped me out. However it took a while because I didn't realize a reboot is needed to get rid of cached fonts I guess.

So the procedure that worked:
1. Uninstall Civ3
2. Move the Lucida Sans fonts out of windows Fonts folder.
3. Reboot
4. Install Civ

I haven't got around to finding out which actual font file is causing the problem. Too impatient to finish wiping out the Japanese :)
