Well me I use Rotate Starting Places by whoward69, then pick the best production start spot of the 4-5 you can chose from. Go for Imperialism as your first 2 Policies(the Free Settler). My build order is usualy, Scout, Monument, Warrior, Warrior, Warrior, Warrior, Scout, Settler, buying your first worker with the gold you get. From there it can go many different ways, but if your after wonders I'd go straight for Great Monuments tech and grab Labrinth wonder asap. Early stages Production is key I find, Starting on only Grassland can be early game killer.

What difficulty level are you playing? Map type? Turning off Raging Barbarians(on by default) can also help a bit, can also hinder though :)

map type is huge earth...
difficulty is the easy one right below prince...
playing as america

I like to go tall, so my first culture selections are: Autocracy (x3) for the +6 culture and Aristocracy (x2) for the +10 gold per turn

Well I find if you do not go for that free settler you lose out one way or the other, getting your 2nd city up and been able to have your capitol producing is a huge benefit, but, I play on King the first difficulty where the AI truly does get bonus's. Gold realy shouldnt be a factor btw.

I have been playing on King as well.... To me it is easier than prince for some reason. With gold, you can expand your city boundaries faster.... that is all I really use gold for anyway...

The AI seems to always go wide... It is very difficult to win with the AI's hold most of the map space and the game really only seems to care about that (as far as points are concerned)
