Lü Bu (? - February 7, 198 AD) was a military general and later a minor warlord during the late Eastern Han Dynasty. According to the Records of Three Kingdoms, Lü Bu was a master in horseback riding and archery, and was thus known as the Flying General. His image as a handsome and mighty warrior wearing a pheasant-tailed helmet and wielding a ji known as the "Sky Piercer" (Chinese: 方天畫戟; pinyin: Fāngtiān Huàjǐ) on top of his steed Red Hare was later popularized by the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the story, he is the single most powerful warrior in all of China, comparable to the Greek hero Achilles in prowess.

We'll try to emulate his brawn but not his brain.
Mod: History of the Three Kingdoms, build .287, patch E with modified start (fewer deletions of our units and fewer duplications of AI's unit):
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=304872
Scenario: 194 AD, the middle sized map (i.e. the original one)
Speed: normal
Difficulty: Monarch
Turn set: 1 year (12 moves) +/- 1 move for any significant events (e.g. about to vassalize or conquer an enemy, capturing a capital, etc)
Requirements:
1. Conquest or domination only, no cultural or diplomatic win
2. Settle the emperor in Luoyang and restore the Han Dynasty
3. Kill (not vassalize) our traditional enemies: Yuan Shao, Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Yuan Shu; everybody else is fair game for vassals
4. Make Lu Bu achieve the most experience of all the generals
5. Capture Wu Yuan (now barbarian but was birthplace of Lu Bu) and hold until the end of the game.

Please read up on the Legion system before joining.

Roster:
1. Another Pacifist [sic]
2. Kenjister
3. blizzrd
4. Xenoborg

Just some background to Lu Bu in the game. He's Aggressive (double production of barracks called Training Grounds with Combat I for melee and mounted troops) and Greedy (a new trait which gives 3 gold but 2 unhappiness in all cities). His faction trait is Tough: all units attack better but defend worse. So our strategy is to attack at all times. His Unique Unit (Anti-Cavalry Battalion) is a modified axeman.

What has already happened so far by 194 is that Dong Zhuo (Lu Bu's former master) is dead, the Emperor Xian is a puppet in the hands of Dong's former general Li Jue (among others), and Han China is divided into local factions all vying for power. The Three Kingdoms have not formed yet. Lu Bu worked for a short time for Yuan Shao (the major power up north) who try to assassinate Lu when he quit his service.

In 194, while Cao Cao was attacking Xuzhou, some of his subjects rebelled and handed Yanzhou to Lu Bu. Cao's first move was to turn back and attack Lu Bu at Puyang (our capital). In real life, Lu Bu was forced out by starvation and had to go to Liu Bei for refuge, but we're going to change history here...

I've been playing this mod for a few weeks now and am starting to get a grasp on it. I have only completed a few games as Sun Ce and Cao Cao, but both went late game so I got the full picture. I would love to play in a SG of it, but its your call if you want someone who is still pretty new to this mod.

edit: BTW, which map size are you going to be using?

1. January. We start out with 3 light cavalry, 1 anti-cavalry battalion (abbreviated as ACB from now on), a professional archer and 5 cities. Note that our civics are:
-corvee (units can be built with food) which is essential since we don't have nearly enough production early on
-hereditary (units have 2+ XP)
-power (more XP with wins in our territory but no trade routes and some unhealthiness--something to change when we have more territory)
-indifference (i.e. cannot switch to a state belief) which is OK for now, since we need the happiness with each different belief in our cities. We do need to switch to either normal or strong belief to switch to Unification, which most of our cities have. So as soon as we conquer a city, to save some moves we will switch to Normal (which allows 25% quicker unit production)
-Despotism (1+ happiness in each city but with some unhappiness built in)
-Private school (allows 15% more great people generation, which we don't really need right now with small cities). Noble school (100% more culture) is way more useful, and doesn't cost more.

1st tech is High-Rise Structures--most factions already have this, but it's essential to get levy crossbows. Now, crossbows for this mod is both weaker and stronger. They are only 4 strength, but they can deal collateral damage! We do not have catapults until Ancient Dictionary, which is a rather expensive tech. So for right now, to knock down cities like Xu Chang which are heavily walled, we need some crossbows first, then for our expert units to mop up the weakened units.

Note I have started ACBs in most cities. What we need is more troops right away, except for Dong Ping which is inaccessible to Cao, so we start a Training Ground there. Once Lu Xian is secured, we can build TGs everywhere.

The first target should be not what's visible in this pic, but Xu Chang, its capital. It is the most productive of Cao's cities, plus it's the holy city for Unification, our future state belief. Usually at this time, Cao is so busy sending troops across into our territory that he neglects to fortify it with troops.

Note also that our legions have overwhelming odds most of the time outside cities.

We open borders with Yuan Shao, the tech and land leader up north, and make sure we don't annoy him too much until we're ready to take him on. Other people mostly hate us, but Liu Bei is neutral (for now), so we OB too. Liu Chong (the Prince of Chen) happens to have no troops in his city, so we capture it soon by leaving Qiao empty. Yuan Shu (Yuan Shao's half-brother) happens to be at war with Liu Chong too, so we OB with him too.

Xiahou Yuan's 2 light cavalry are easily destroyed, and I send Lu Bu down to board a galley (quickest way to get to Xu Chang).

Spoiler :

2. February. Lu Bu boards the galley and heads for Qiao, while we close in on Chen. Cao's troops approach our cities, which is exactly what we want--outside of his cities.

3. March. We kill more troops. Some troops are approaching Guan Du which is vulnerable, so we send a cavalry over there.

4. April. The "better AI" leaves Xu Chang with just 1 archer (before it had 3 Qingzhou Rebels)! We easily capture it. While we wait for the city to come out of rebellion, we switch to Strong belief (more XP) and noble school.

5. May. Switch to Unification for 25% more troop building and some happiness (some of our cities are empty of troops now). Also, troops are healing right now.

6. June. More healing while training grounds are being built.

7. July. Our troops approach Lu Xian.

8. August. Xu Chang comes out of rebellion.

9. September. High rise structures learned. Switch to fishing (due to lack of money and need more food--some fishes already have work boats but we can't use them right now). Start crossbows in Xu Chan and Pu Yang. Kill 4 troops in Lu Xian after sacrificing our starting crossbow.

10. October. Waiting for troops to heal.

11. November. Fishing learned. Switch to state monopoly (with goal of getting iron near Xu Chang) (I would have usually gone for Military Advisor, but since Lu Bu's UU is so strong it's not really necessary for now, and we can't build swords anyway until we have iron). Lu Xian is captured. All troops converge on Chen Liu

12. December. Some crossbows come online. We start some workers since we need growth.

Spoiler :

Next target should be Luoyang (Yang Feng), Bei Hai (Kong Rong) and Wan (Yuan Shu is still at war with Liu Bei). Just bear in mind that Yuan Shao should be always at the back of our minds since he cannot be allowed to grow too much, and Ye is best taken by surprise.

After State Monopoly, I would go for Military Advisor and Reformed Poetry. One of our cities should build a school, so that we can build the Tianlu Library (i.e. Oracle) and choose Jianan Literature for the 2 wonders (Chancellor Mansion and Royal Hunting Field). Using these techs we can trade for a lot of other techs.

Ok, I've got the save... playing soon.

It seems AP has left me to finish off the menace Cao Cao. Fortunately he has ensured victory without a doubt.

1. January: Lu Bu's legion and the accompanying crossbow cross the river so they can better assault Chen Liu. Zhang Liao takes Vigorous II and heals to the north of the city.

2. Feburary: Fortune has smiled upon us this month! Our suicide crossbowman from the south wins his attack, eliminating Cao Cao's crossbowman and inflicting a good deal of collateral damage. Lu Bu himself leads the next charge with his ACB, winning his 97% odds battle. Following him is Zhang Liao from the North, who knockes out a Qingzhou Rebel. The following two 60% odds attacks from assorted ACB's also win, giving us Chen Liu without a single casualty. I still can't belive our luck. I guess Luo Yang and Wan will fall faster than expected. On the domestic side, I start some more workers as we need some cottages to keep up with Yuan Shao and his economy. I don't think farms are needed much right now, especially since we don't have Jian'an Literature yet.

Spoiler :
If anyone can care to tell me how to insert a screenie, I'd be much appreciated. I can't seem to figure it out right now. Maybe I need more sleep...

3. March: A quite uneventful month. Xiahou Dun advances toward Luo Yang with one ACB and a drill crossbow. Everyone else rests to heal. I also start an ACB in Pu Yang in preperation for capturing Bei Hai.

4. April: Xiahou Dun is bumped back by Luo Yang's borders expanding before I DOW'd on Yang Feng... one precious turn lost. Workers head to farm Chen Liu's Sorghum, and another starts a cottage by Guan Du. We really need cash, our research rate is plummeting.

5. May: I declare on Yang Feng and Xiahou Dun enters the borders of Luo Yang, closely supported by Zhang Liao, who arrived with his fully healed cavalry. Also meet Liu Biao and sign Open Borders, could come in useful later.

6. June: All troops in Chen Liu are healed, assigned to a hero and set to march for Wan. This is a slight gamble, as defeated Cao Cao generals will easily betray, but if Wan is left alone too long, it will become enveloped in Liu Biao's culture when we do take it, making it quite useless. On the other hand, I doubt there is any large force of troops in Wan at the moment. Luo Yang is sure to fall however.

7. July: The main army continues towards Wan, while Zhang Liao begins to decimate the garrison of Luo Yang. The roads are in horrible condition, that needs to be remedied soon. Gao Shun is also making his way towards Pu Yang.

8. August: Luo Yang is taken by Xiahou Dun, and Xu Huang surrenders. We currently have a very large collection of generals, and a very poor economy. Markets are started in a few cities (Markets give +3 :gold: in this mod, useful for early game, not as great later). Chen also gets cottages.

9. September: Workers work, and legions march. More cottages for Chen and more Markets started.

10. October: War declared on Yuan Shu, and the moment of truth arrives as our forces come into sight of his city. He only has one Private Guard. Great luck once again. Losses would be inconvinient to replace, as our cities are all constructing Markets or Family Altars to combat growing cultural pressure.

11. November: Gao Shun leads his legion toward Bei Hai with the resounding trumpet of the war horn. Four ACB's and a crossbowman should be enough to take Bei Hai, if not, then a seige is in order.

12. December: State Monopoly is finally finished, Wan is now within attacking range, and Gao Shun is not quite within sight of Bei Hai. I decide not to risk Xiahou Yuan on an 88% change of victory Cavalry attack. Wan is destined to fall anyways, so I decided to go with caution. I'll leave the Honors to Blizzrd. (Nice to see you here from the RFC forums btw! I lurk there alot... perhaps I should post more.)

Basically this round was setting the post conquest domestics straight, though I didn't do as good of a job as I liked. Our troop levels are decent though, and Ru Nan is within striking range of Zhang Liao's Cavalry who are stationed in Xu Chang. I started a Library in Luo Yang and a few other cities, perhaps a bit more than needed, but they'll have to be built eventually. Furthermore, the cities are in dire need of growth which they won't get while building troops (since we're running Corvee). I also chose to take a 3 turn detour from our research path to grab Way of the Celestial Masters. After all, Unification's strength lies in it's Advisor Mansions. An early GP can make all the difference!

As a final note, we're under pretty immense cultural pressure from Liu Bei, so if we still have troops left after taking out Yuan Shu and Kong Rong, he may be a prime canidate for annihilation. Plus, Lu Bu never got along that well with him anyways.

If we can find a way to get a Great Philosopher (Great Priest), a Unification shrine in Xu Chang could probably produce 60 beakers. The city also already has a school and another +25% beakers from its city wonder.

Unfortunately our only source would be a Philosopher specialist from a Commandery (Temple). We will be building these anyway for thier other effects (2 happy and 10% food after growth), but with our current civics it would take 50 turns to get a GP(-25% from civics).

I submit we swap Pu Yang to a Commandery right away so that it can begin getting GPP toward a Philosopher. If we wait and build Mansions (Missionaries, ours having 10% sci and +1 free specialist) first we either pollute the GPP pool or miss a Philosopher altogether.

What do you guys think?
edit: Also not sure how much to explain for lurkers, that sure was alot of ( ) there.

Lurker's comment:
@Kenjister: Basically you sign up for a free image hosting like imageshack or photobucket, then after you upload the image to their server, get the direct link and put them between IMG tags.

It should look like this when you put it in your post:
Code:
(img)http://url.of/image.jpg(/img)
Just replace ( and ) with [ and ] respectively.

I was going to suggest generating not 1 but 3 great philosophers due to the fact that we now have 3 shrines. I would go for Xu Chang first, then Wan (for money) then Pu Yang (for espionage). I find that espionage in this game is a little underpowered since techs are so expensive that it's usually more useful to use spies to open city gates. We should devote our espionage to Yuan Shao completely, since he's the one that we really want blitzkrieg on, and when we will have enough infrastructure to build spies, send some towards Ye and Han Dun.

Speaking of beliefs, Chen and Guan Du don't have Unification, so yes, we need it spread.

I was kinda regretting we didn't build the Terracotta Army ourselves for culture.

After Jianan Lit is learned I would aim for the path to Laws of Wei (to be able to get vassals). Zang Ba is a good little vassal and his lands are not so great, and we don't need the additional maintenance. And yes, after Yuan Shu is dead, Liu Bei should be our next target (preferably shortly after he builds his shrine), but then we might want to take a little detour and capture Liu Biao's Xiangyang (a great city with good troop production). He tends to hoard culture (impacting on Wan) and build high walls there, and his archers are formidable, so getting the city early is better than late.

Another way to do pictures is to click on the "Insert Image" icon and upload a pic with "Manage Attachments." I usually just hit "Print Screen" for a screenie, which is uploaded to the Screenshots folder in the same folder than has your Saves folder.

Actually, farms are more than useful here even before Jianan Lit is learned, I wouldn't not build any cottages at all. As long as you can have large cities you can always assign specialists for gold. There are so many rivers in our lands that all of them have 1 gold. Also, we should switch to Confucianism at some point to be able to improve our lands quicker, since we don't need Power any more. The optimal time would be when we have Jianan Lit for Agrarian Colony and in GA.

Are there any other nearby buildings/wonders that can get us priest points? If not, we will have a hard time getting more than 1 Philosopher before we get drowned out by other types from free specialists or wonders.

Well, there was the Terracotta Army (which I usually build anyway)...

Well, there was the Terracotta Army (which I usually build anyway)...

Yeah 120 hammers (60 with stone) is incredibly cheap compared to 30 in every city. Since its already gone our only option is to go at 2 GPP. Once we get 1 shrine up we can run 3 more priests from it though.

Checking in, downloading Patch C now. I haven't played v2.4 of this mod, but I have played with the previous version. I won't be able to take my turns until after work tonight, approx 12 hours from now. Will do read up on the changes in the latest version today.

ok, thanks for the image uploading tips!

I started building cottages right away as we didn't have much specialist slots in any of our cities. Once the population is up and buildings built, it would definitely be the better course of action to farm them over. I also didn't go for the Terrocotta Army because usually Yuan Shao starts it in Ye at the beginning of the game. I usually go for it though, oh well. I decided an early library and market in the Capital was a safer choice. Our troops should be able to take care of the cultural pressure from Liu Bei.

I agree with the plan to take XiangYang, after all it does have one of the 8 Great City wonders in it, along with great resources. Perhaps it should be a priority target over Liu Bei, since Swift Bowmen are the best second-tier defenders in the game.

Welcome all, let's recap our present situation.

We are at war with Yuan Shu and are about to capture Wan. We also have Zhang Liao's cavalry troops stationed in Xu Chang, who could head south into Yuan Shu's territory to attack the city of Ru Nan. We are also at war with Rong Kong and have the Gao Shun legion deep in their territory. Lastly, we are at war with Yang Feng after recently capturing Luo Yang. However, as we have no land border with Yang Feng and are unlikely to head via a galley into their territory I think it is time to make peace, at least a cease fire.

We are currently set to research Way of the Celestial Masters (3 turns). I agree, this seems best to learn before Military Advisor.

Goals (as previously posted, in no particular order):
  • Generate a Great Philosopher
  • Build more city infrastructure
  • Enable and build the TianLu Library
  • Improve our road network
  • Finish off Yuan Shao and Kong Rong
  • Spread Unification to cities without it

Great summary. (It's Kong Rong, and I think you mean finish off Yuan Shu (Yuan Shao is the yellow big guy up north))

I think the next time we capture a city or 2, it would be good to switch to Confucianism and away from hereditary (even though the former would increase our maintenance). We have too much good land and too little time to improve it. Playing RFC made me hesitant to switch civics, but there's no stability in this game (at least not yet), so switching civics isn't so harmful.

Yeah, I usually make peace with Yang Feng after I capture Luoyang, he can't really touch us without going through Yuan Shao's land.

A School (library) in Pu Yang is a good thing, it will allow us to build the Tianlu Library.

Turn 0: December 195AD
If we are to ever spawn a Great Philosopher, we surely need a Commandery. As suggested, Pu Yang's Market is put on hold (3 turns to go) to start a Commandery (7 turns). Switch Pu Yang to work the Cow so that Commandery is ready in 6 turns instead.

Set all of our espionage to Yuan Shao (it was previously not focused). Sign a cease fire agreement peace with Yang Feng, we don't need this war weariness for no reason. Yuan Shao will give us Cotton for free, so I ask and we receive.

Turn 1: Jan 196AD
Zhang Yang wants to trade Sheep for our Iron -> NO. But Sheep for Cow is fine though. Xu Chung starts a Granary. Wan captured, our troops head SE towards Ru Nan.

Turn 2: Feb
Meet Zang Ba and open borders. Zhan Liao removes 2x Private Guards from Ru Nan. Conscript Archers leave Liu Xian to pick off a wandering Conscript Militia formerly belonging to Kong Rong. Trade Dye from Yuan Shao for Sorghum. Our troops arrive next to Bei Hai (Kong Rong capital).

Turn 3: Mar
Way of Celestial Masters is learnt, choose Military Advisor next. Ru Nan captured as last two Private Guards are destroyed. Bei Hai captured for no losses! Five defenders removed were 3x Levy Crossbowmen, 1x Private Guard and 1x Siege Ballista. Sign a cease fire agreement with Kong Rong, because they have 3 units within striking distance of the newly captured Bei Hai and we only have one wounded Levy Crossbowman inside the city.

Turn 4: Apr
Uneventful, many units healing.

Turn 5: May
Wan is pacified, but foreign culture from the south is cramping it already. More units healing.

Turn 6: Jun
DOW Kong Rong (again) to capture a worker that was working just outside of Bei Hai. Pu Yang finishes Commandery and assigns a Philosopher specialist. 50 turns until Great Philosopher(!).

Turn 7: Jul
Bei Hai and Ru Nan are pacified. Ru Nan is also cramped by foreign culture from the south.

Turn 8: Aug
Meet Zhang Xian and open borders. Troops are now closing on Shou Chun, Yuan Shu's capital. Gao Shun legion heads out of Bei Hai towards Kong Rong's capital.

Turn 9: Sep
Advisor Mansions built, 2x Unification Advocates started. Temporarily increase science to 60% to bring Military Advisor next turn. Pounding of defenders in Shou Chou begins, 2x defenders removed.

Turn 10: Oct
Military Advisor learnt, choose Reformed Poetry next. Shou Chun is captured without loss as the last 3 defenders are removed. Meet Liu Yao and Sun Ce but can't open borders with either.

Turn 11: Nov
Troops approach Dong Cheng, the new capital for Yuan Shu, and also Qu Cheng, the new capital for Kong Rong.

Turn 12: Dec
Uneventful, troops continue to approach Dong Cheng and Qu Cheng.

Spoiler :
Many of our cities are about to finish production of various buildings on our next turn. After 2x Advocates (missionaries) are built on this next turn we should build at least 2 more to spread more Unification amongst our cities.

I'm still learning the Legion system and it is a work in progress. Any advice others can give would be gladly received.

Great summary. (It's Kong Rong, and I think you mean finish off Yuan Shu (Yuan Shao is the yellow big guy up north))

Got it, I'm still coming to terms with all the names - many of which are very similar. I'll leave civics switching to the next turn set.
