So I thought the unhappiness from defying a resolution was supposed to disappear when I voted for a resolution that passed.

In my current game (standard size, standard speed, continents, immortal, Qin) I xbow rushed Izzy and the "end war against Spain" resolution popped up right away. I had no choice but to defy as this was my big break-out move. Soon, Suleiman joined in the fun against me and my cities were devastated with unhappiness, most starving, army on strike...you get the picture. (We are all Jewish.) After taking Izzy's capital the resolution came up again and I voted for it. The resolution passed, ending my war with Spain but the world still thinks I'm a villain.

What's the deal? I am still at war with Suleiman but this shouldn't matter. Also, I captured the Apostolic Palace in Madrid so maybe I am in a better position long term, though I am sure the other two will vote together.
Any experienced players know what's going on here?

That villain penalty is a real pain so far as I can recall since it lingers around for a long time. It stays there for a while even if your position within the AP changes and you start to vote with the majority again. It's one of those things I don't fully understand either, so I'll wait for others to comment also.

LOL, I simply don't care a rat's a** about the villian penalty. What did Caligula say... Let them hate us as long as they fear us too?

You will care about the penalty when your cities are starving to death and your war effort grinds to a halt. Everybody always said the penalty disappears when you vote for a resolution that pases. I did and the penalty remains.

The most satisfying part of having the AP in a game is razing the city that built it. :D Anyway, voting for a resolution that passes doesn't make the villain penalty go away. That'll go away on its own in time.

It's a lot similar to the Statue of Zeus, the reason someone wants to build such a wonder is to make life miserable on any Civ that decides to declare war on them. If there was no penalty for defying a resolution then people would just do that everytime they didn't like something. With that happiness thing I vote No and hope for the best. If the No voting isn't working, best to just go ahead and spread that AP religion to all your cities and get a stronger vote.

*laughs as well*

I agree w. you about the penalty. But do remember one thing if you're going to go quoting Caligula of all people.

It didn't work out so well for him in the end.

The sentiment of the quote is solid in your case though. I just wouldn't compare myself to Caligula.
