I guess most people here are somehow shocked about the most recent announcement that Millennia is the next Civ..
We need to be pro-active on this, and need to make some important decisions right now, while also going on a self-finding journey, I guess.
What do we want to be?

  • We are civ-fanatics, have always been civ-fanatics, and will always stay civ-fanatics
  • Or is Millennia the new way to go, and should we be Millennia-fanatics?
Obviously we can also wait, to see if Firaxis comes up with something like "Civilization 7: Millennia", which would obviously the best for us. I mean... getting a new URL is the easiest thing, but having Millennia follow in the list after Civ5, and Civ6, that is just very anti-climactic.
We hope that this will not lead to a split of the Civ community, and that we can still go united for another 24 years.

The moderation team is already doing some soul-searching, but public input is very welcome.

EDIT: Attention, April Fools' ;).

I hate making new layouts, the admin panel for this is just terrible.

1. We have never been "civ-fanatics."

2. "MFC" doesn't have the same ring as "CFC". Besides, there's a series of mystery/horror computer games called "Mystery Case Files" (MCF). I wouldn't want to get confused.

3. "Millennia" is so 23 years ago (to get technical).

4. So, no. (why are you still posting, @The_J? The AI took away your mod privileges!)

I almost wish the merger was real, because that banner looks beautiful.

Wow, that looks nice .

We actually thought about making this a forum theme, but then we'd at minimum also need an Old World theme first. I am not opposed to this, but creating the layouts is a goddamn ugly and annoying task, and I really don't want to do it.

And as everyone has figured now: This was an April Fools' joke, thanks to Lymond Birdjaguar, Leif, blake00, Quintillus, Arakhor and Gedemon for their contributions.

Eh, the original background was better, except you could see the join. Salute to him as is to blame for it.

Ghost Olaf and the legible silver line hide a lot...

It couldn't be displayed in China because of the prominent skeletal motifs (weird, I know).

Some fiddlin' improvements to both --- nature of the thing, w/ a nit-picky artist at work.

Aw heck ... get me access, and I'll whip up a theme or two for you. I DO feel like it.
Those are looking good! And it would be great to have another theme or two!

Let me put together some notes on how we did this with the Christmas theme that I created a year and a half or so ago. (This post may be edited to add more information).

The first thing to note is that only admins can have access to edit this directly on XenForo. Thus, I do not have access and was not editing it directly on CFC, rather @The_J or one of the other admins was uploading the theme I was working on. (Unless there's a custom group we could add you to that only gives theme-creation abilities? That's probably hoping for too much)

But it is possible to create themes without being an admin. You can create your own XenForo demo instance from this page, where you'll have full admin access and can add themes to your heart's content. It has to be re-created every 7 days, so keep your work locally as well, but while the 7-day expiry is a bit annoying, it's workable (and maybe if you ask XenForo nicely and explain that you're just creating themes for a forum and not running a forum on the demo instance, they'll extend that for you).

I know we also shared the base "Civ VI" theme in one of the threads that emerged from the Christmas theme. So you can import the base Civ VI theme, and start modifying it from there.

Let me find those links and update this post with them...

Update: Found the thread. I see you'd already found and replied to it in the past, but as I couldn't find where the base styles were in that thread or the related Xmas theme thread, I've attached them to the first post now. It should be possible to import the base Civ VI style into a XenForo demo instance, so it will look very similar to CFC when that theme is enabled, and so you can modify from there rather than having to re-create a similar theme from scratch. That's how I did it with the XMas theme (which I've also attached as an additional reference).

The_J - is there an up-to-date base theme we can put in that post? I don't think a lot has changed since then, but one thing that has changed is that we fixed the typo in the word "Civilization", and perhaps there are other updates that are under my radar.

Civilisation is still spelt incorrectly. ;)

How about do an '80's cliche and have, "Civilixation," with a soft, "x." :P

The innerwebs long ago conditioned me to bitterly resist attempts to make me sign up at yet another site - as in, I'll labor in the diabolical den of madness that is the themes interface (I'd be surprised if XenForo's is significantly better or worse than several others I've wrestled down and mastered) but jumping through those extra hoops to do it offsite is a deal-breaker.

@Thunderfall -As Quintillus said: "Unless there's a custom group we could add you to that only gives theme-creation abilities?" Such a thing would be very much in CFC's interest. Under the watchful eye of the staff, why turn away free labor towards the improvement of this here popsicle stand?

OMG, that's even worse!

Anyways, here's a better idea.

The site needs to be renamed to Old World Fanatics Centre. ;)

Well, it used to be "Civilziation", so we're getting closer. I see XenForo does have a "Language" setting, maybe we can add British (Australian?) English as an option. Might need some guidance on what else to switch, though.

Oh, gosh... I'm familiar with "connexion", but always thought it was pronounced more or less than same as "connection". I'm not even sure how you'd say that with a soft "x". Is there an audio recording of that somewhere, or a reference for that cliche that I'm unaware of?

(I've also noted your post, Buster's Uncle, but we'll have to wait for an admin to comment on it. For what it's worth, XenForo hasn't been spamming me, or if they started to, they respected the "Unsubscribe" option. I agree having a more integrated option would be better)

No need to sign up ;).
It requires an email to sign up, but that doesn't need to be a valid email. I guess you might get a link with your demo instance if you use one, but not sure. Otherwise you need to bookmark the page, and after 7 days everything is gone anyways in this case.

@Quintillus will do.

I was referring to the broader, cheesier '80's trope of inserting an, "x," into a commonly used word wherever phonetically possible.
