From the 1.3 Patch Notes
"Nation Distinctiveness
As version 1.3 hints at, we want the nations to be much, much more distinct. Under the covers, they are actually pretty different. Each AI player does actually play the game somewhat differently. However, the game must communicate this more for it to mean anything and one way to do that is to make sure the nations have unique content."
This, IMHO, other than the UI was/is ARA's greatest weakness. (Diplomacy has greatly improved.) While Civs each get a unique ability, the rest is just a collection of +10 or -10 something.
I would like to see unique units, unique improvements and unique buildings. Also, have each Civ look visually distinct. I would like to see terrace farms for the Inca to make use of mountains which are otherwise useless, for example. Mongols would have yurts/gers and a lot more people riding around on horseback in a generally more "rural" looking city.
There is a lot to like and I feel the game is on the right path. I do think this game is underrated and deserves to be revisited by the general gaming community.
