Other options such as 1) Cultural or Heritage Resource Management (working with engineers)... 2) perhaps be converted into a specialist for one of your museums (as curator) rather than build a landmark... 3) Since Archaeologists are Anthropologists they could study "tribes" (barbarian encampments) and gain/extract/learn something from them, perhaps a new plant species (medicinal for better city growth or a food), new scouting capabilities, some discovery having to do with faith... 4) then there are a whole slew of Archaeologists through the world specialized in compliance, i.e. dealing with problems associated with modernity vs. desecration (NAGPRA and burial mounds for example)

Could just have some hidden ruins for him to discover (as opposed to the right-out-in-the-open ruins).

It's possible that open borders won't have an effect, like they do with prophets (or missionaries, to some extent).
It occurred to me that you should just be able to block the site with a military unit. That seems a bit off to me, since the AI probably won't know to do it.

I do think that Open Borders are required; I believe this was mentioned in one of the previews.
That's true. A diplomatic option to ask them to stop (for both kinds of incursions) would be nice though.

But then again, we don't even really have a way to warn civilizations not to attack our city-state allies; you can offer to bribe them to stop, or demand that they stop, but if they refuse, they'll still be shocked when you declare war.

Has anyone ever got anything they "demanded"? I never have in well over a thousand hours of play.

I like the idea of getting works of art from old ruins, but I'm not sure I like the Landmark tile improvement. I don't know when you get archeologists, but I assume it's mid to late game when you have pretty much already settled all your cities. It will be quite random whether a ruin appears near enough to one of your cities that actually could use the Landmark. That could just be me though because I like to have one city specialize in culture, but you can't do that easily without reliable Landmark improvements.

I got double digits of gold from Babylon, on Warlord with 8 cities to their 2 and a prominent, more advanced military. But that's it.

It was my understanding that Ed Beach, in a video interview, said that if you have open borders with another civ, you can take your archaeologist unit into their territory and dig up one of their sites and either give it to them or keep it at the risk of escalating tension between yours and their nation!

Archeologists were one of the more interesting additions in my opinion!

Apparently the option to create a landmark is just an option for those who are more interested in building their cultural defense, as it gives you a culture producing tile.....because if you take the artifact and put it in one of your museums, it increases your offensive culture game in the form of tourism. So they will be useful to those who aren't going for a cultural victory but would like to increase their chances of defending from another civ's offensive tourism.

Well, artifacts give culture as well as tourism. I'd guess the Landmark option is in case all your Great Work slots are filled.

Given that Landmarks aren't made by Great Artists or their ilk anymore and that Archaeological Sites aren't likely to be terribly common and that culture is produced less by buildings now, making Landmarks on the sites that fall in your borders would be fairly desirable.

Especially if you can enact the World Congress resolution that gives Historical Landmarks +4 culture.

Given that the new Archaeology landmarks are called specifically "Historical Landmarks," I wouldn't be so sure that there isn't still some method of creating regular landmarks.

Well, culture's not just being relegated to defense. You still need to expand borders and buy sopols.
