Some units have a bombard strength with a range of zero. These units will fire only if an enemy attacks another unit they are stacked with (Catapults, Trebuchets, etc. have always worked this way).
2. If it is one solitary archer, then no. If it is 2+ archers, they get one free shot for every archer except one. So a stack of 7 archers alone give 6 free shots (1 free shot per attack per archer...if that makes any sense).
1. No. fortify/sentry status has no effect on this ability
2. If you have several archers in a stack, one will get his "free shot". A unit cannot fire more than once, nor will it fire if the unit is itself being attacked.
Something I noticed too while playing. My regular swordsman getting reduced to conscript status because he got shot in the butt by an archer in the back row. But now when " I " have the archers in my stack and they are getting free shots it a different story.
From what I have seen they do not have to be fortified
If you have one spearman and one archer in a stack and the stack is attack by one enemy then the archer will fire one free shot and the spearman gets to do the dirty work.
If you have 2 spearman and 2 archers in a stack and are attacked by 2 enemy units then the archers will have 1 free shot each, with both spearman again getting to do the defending.
