Are children sent to school too early?

But you'd be trading two hours of the useful part of the day for two hours of the useless part of the day!

Well I suppose the whole point of 8 AM starts is that not everyone has a parent that can wait around until 11 AM to shovel them off to class.

I think it should start later, time wise of course. My first period classes are always the ones I'm half awake for and have trouble remembering things in.

The reason kids are not playing outside, is not the schools' fault, it's thier own parents buying them TV's and computers and not encourging them to play instead letting them rot on the couch.

I find school to be a waste. I regret that I have gone. I was homeschooled by my dad on my free time. I am years ahead of my stupid classmates. I found that atleast 90% of the time in school is wasted.

You're also a neo-nazi.

School was a system meant to create uncreative industrial workers, which had the job of training children from the very beginning to do everything at the ringing of a bell.

The point is, today's society doesn't need such a system, and the system is obsolete within it.

And it shows.

I agree except for when you say that it is obsolete today. Training uncreative industrial workers is still beneficial to the capitalists, as it trains obediance and respect for the authority. The difference about today and 100 years ago is that today, instead of workers working in factories, they work in offices.

Age-wise: No, you learn better when you are younger.
Time-Wise: Yes, im tired of having to get up at 6 am every day.

Nobody's wondering just who is going to deliver these children to the schools at 11 or 12 if the parents are already off to work making sure that child has food and clothing and all sorts of other stuff.

If it means they can't be awake at 10, 11, or 12 at night because they have to get up earlier, then tough noogies.

Hell, I had to get up at 5 AM when my high school's schedule was pushed earlier to accommodate the students from Stuyvestant High School that had to move in after 9/11. And it was uphill, both ways, in da snow! :old:

Maybe where you're from that's true.

That doesn't match the history of education in the US.

To steer this back on-topic: For everyone who thinks that schools are just designed to make mindless robots, what do you think of universtiys?

I posted this in that other thread but I suppose you meant for it here, so:

Liberal liberal mindless robots! :p

Though it might depend on the school and program.

I get 6-8 hours of homework a day in high school, does that count as a crap load?

I find that pretty hard to believe. I think most people claim to have such astronomical amounts of homework because they don't manage their time well. They spend time talking on the computer, watching TV, and listening to music, all of which distracts them from actually doing their homework.

If I recall correctly, "two hours" of your homework took you twenty minutes when I kicked you from the chatroom :p.

Actually, I do get that amount, I get about 2 hours total done in school, 4 hours done at home. That once incident Gogf is referring to is true, but that was simple typing, and I forgot how fast of a typer I can be when I want to. Still, I do get, on average, 6 hours of homework a day.

Honestly, we should prepare are children for education as the Spartans prepared theirs for war.

Education is of ample importance and a child should be thrown in as early as possible to grind in intellect, creativity and work ethic into their still malleable minds.

Are you saying you don't want us in #fiftychat anymore? :(

I know, I know, you're just making a point of doing homework instead of other things (ex. fiftychat).

I think the school system is bunk period, but if its what we have to go on then I say that children go at just the rite time. You know what, the things you learn at age four stay with you forever I swears it, I still remember all of the vowels, rite off the top of my head without even thinking for a second. If someone asked me to name them all I would do it instantly almost by reaction, I dont even ever remember memorizing them, let alone ever having a real life function where I needed to know them. This may seem small, but from expierience with my little brother, crap you learn at that very young age just sticks and never lets go, I think age five(which is the starting age around here) is just fine. as for the actual time fo day i think thats fine to.
