Are there any units that strike fear in your heart?

Are there any units, civ specific or not, that when you see stacks of them actually make you sit up and become just a little afraid?
For example, the last game I was playing, I saw two stacks plus a few strays of War Elephants along my northern border. It wasn't the first time I'd seen them or anything, but it was the first time I noticed how much bigger and meaner they look compared to a knight

Yes, yes, I know they are the same same stats, but when I saw them, I have to admit I panicked (a little), and immediately signed a RoP agreement for fear they were planning a sneak attack. They soon went away. Never mind that I had WAY more knights, I just got freaked out by those suckers.

well its those nice iroquious civ specific units i hate in the beggining of the game. ANd usualy panzers scare the hell outa me later on. I usualy kill those dirty Germans before they can use them though, just for the reason that they attack me whenever they get those.

It's not exactly for the same reason, but Impies scare me the most. Zulu cities mean bloody death to Horsemen armies. Usually I'll leave the Zulus alone until Knights are available, none of the other Civs can stand up against an early Horse rush. If the AI would use Samurai in defensive situations they would be just as bad, but I've never seen them used in that way.

Immortals, hate em '.

Two Things:

1. To have this discussion, you have to be getting into the game WAY too much.

2. That said, the first time I encountered an enemy army in the game spooked me a bit. I'd never had one, never seen one, didn't know what they were really capable of... So I killed it.

It's not so much any of the unique units that strike fear into my heart, as the appearance of Infantry.

I tend to play a tech-intensive game that lets me do a nice romp with Cavalry in the late Middle Ages/early Industrial era. When I see those Infantry start to crop up, I know the fun is over.

(Unless I'm the Germans, in which case I sign a couple of peace treaties, then sit back and wait for my nice shiny Panzers.)

I too was sppoked by the AI's army.
funny thing though.. it didn't attack with it so i got to squash it later with my cavalry :goodjob:

oh yea, it was an Iroquois army with a mounted warrior, a swrdsman and a spearman
:D

What units strike fear???

Any unit that is an Age ahead of me! They are not only better, they show how far behind I am in Science.

A big stack of 12-15 units coming at me is impressive also; Civ II never did that for many reasons.

Massive barbarian uprising near XXX...

Then over the hills comes a stack or two of horseman with more units than I can count. Soils my shorts every time... :aargh3:

... decimates the war chest I built up via tech trading...

... pulverizes a perfectly happy border city...

... leaves city defenses torn asunder for my nearest enemy...

... generally takes the wind out of my sails.

Yeah, I know how to minimize the impact, hell, I asked for it when I picked raging barbarians. Nonetheless, my pulse quickens when I spot those wild-eyed barbarians.

I hate the chariots, not becauase they're so strong, but there are always masses of them

Other unfriendly UU is the Hoplites, I bite out my teeth in early days (*shiver*)

Panzer tanks scare me the most.......so much in fact that I have made it my duty to rid the world of Panzers so I don't have to live that fear

Hordes of samurai.

Assuming the Japanese develop them before you develop, say, Cavalry, they'll be happy to attack you. :D

Alternately: Hordes of Persian Immortals in games where your civ has NO iron.

Hoplites are a pain in the buttocks, because you are hard-pressed to get something that matches their defense of 3 :(

BUt I'm not really scared of any unit ;)

No unit strikes fear in my heart like the Sodak UU, the Frowning Wife. Once she enters the scene, no strategy or strategic resource can save me...

When war elephants charged towards my peaceful civilization that was the end of me. Scary.
